• It is an autosomal dominant disease involving a gene on chromosome 3p25, which normally acts as a tumour suppressor gene
• This defect in the tumour suppressor gene leads to CNS hemangioblastomas, retinal angiomas (tumour of vasculature, or blood supply, in the retina), pheochromocytomas and renal carcinomas
