Mutliple Sclerosis

• progressive demyelination of neurons of brain, spinal cord, and cranial nerves
• interferes with proper conduction of impulses
• inflammatory plaques along nerves develop, can become permanent
• characterized by period of normal function; considerable individual range of severity
• The age of onset is typically 20-40 yearsof age
• thought to perhaps be an autoimmune disorder
