Types of joints vary in the degree of movement allowed:
- Synarthroses (immovable)
- Amphiarthroses (slightly movable, cartilage & bone)
- Diarthroses or Synovial (freely movable)
- articular cartilage facilitates movement
- synovial fluid lubricates & provides nutrition to joint surfaces
- joint capsule and synovial membrane
Dislocation is loss of contact between articulating surfaces.
Subluxation is partial loss of contact between surfaces.
- soft tissue damage to ligaments, nerves & blood vessels
- deformity, pain, swelling, decreased movement, x-ray
- treat with reduction, immobilization and subsequent therapy to restore mobility
