Cholinesterase

• a molecule (enzyme) that normally breaks down excess acetylcholine (a major neurotransmitter) between neurons to prevent excessive firing of neurons
• it is naturally found in the synaptic cleft (space between two neurons) throughout the nervous system
• Inhibitors of cholinesterase are given to patients with Myasthenia Gravis (decreased acetylcholine)
