Matter
- present in infancy with progressively enlarging head and regression
- brain biopsy is needed for diagnosis
- both are autosomal recessive
- deficiency in asparto acylase, leading to N-acetyl aspartic acid accumulation
- shows spongy degeneration in Canavan's; shows Rosenthal fibers in Alexander's
