Gamma Geminorum

Alhena is also know as Gamma Geminorium since it is classed at the third brightest star in the constellation Gemini with Alpha Geminorium (Castor) and Beta Geminorium (Pollux) being brighter.

The spectral classification of Alhena is A1IV. A1 is the "temperature" type of the star (the temperature scale ranging from hottest to coolest is O,B,A,F,G,K,M and it is further broken down with subclasses 0-9). The luminosity class of Alhena is IV or subgiant where Ia and Ib are luminous supergiants, II bright giant, III giants, IV subgiants and V dwarfs.

By coincidence shelties are roughly subgiant in size if you consider supergiants to be the giant breeds (eg. Irish Wolfhound) and dwarfs to be the toy breeds. Not sure how I can relate surface temperature to dogs yet ;). If I decided to concentrate on blue merles I might be able to make this work since the color of an A1 star is blue. But at present my shelties are sables.
