The Nepalese calls her Sagarmantha, the forehead of the sky and the Tibetan named her Chomolungma, the mother goddess of the earth. She was eventually named after the Royal Surveyer to India, Sir George Everest, whose survey in 1848 discovered her to be the highest peak in the world. Rising to 8848m (29030ft) and the tallest in the range that irrigates the food baskets of China and India and a symbol of religious importance to the Buddhists.
