Chapter Two: Amity

Zephlin's day was uneventful, as usual, until dinnertime. Seating herself as far away from Malcolm and Graham as she could get, she paid no attention to the headmaster, who was speaking to them. Glancing up at the old man for a slight second, she was surprised to see a group of people standing off to the side. Professor McGonagall was standing beside them.

"--exchange students from Beauxbatons. They will be staying with us for four months, then 14 of our students will go there." Whispers rang out through the Great Hall, but stopped once Professor Dumbledore began talking again. "To make their stay as Hogwarts-esque as it can get, we will now commence their sorting. Professor McGonagall, if you would."

The black haired witch led the group over to the sorting hat, which Zephlin didn't notice beforehand. The sorting hat sang no song, which Zephlin thought unusual but ignored it. As the sorting hat sorted the first three students, the next one, Adeil Farfelu, a tall girl with platinum white hair, took her place on the stool. Zephlin looked around and noticed a vast majority of the male population were practically drooling over the girl. The black haired girl rolled her eyes in disgust.

"SLYTHERIN!"

The boys from the Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff tables looked away with disappointment, which made the girl smirk. Without looking at any of the other Slytherin's, the girl made her way down the table, her eyes focused on the solitary Zephlin, who was watching the rest of the sorting with boredom. Seating herself in front of the distracted girl, Adeil snarled at the first-year boy beside her, who happened to be excited that the white-haired girl was sitting next to him. When Elijah Zézayer, a thin boy with black and blue spiked hair, sat on the stool up front, Adeil scowled. 'I hope to hell he doesn't get in Slytherin!'

"SLYTHERIN!"

Pounding her fist on the table, making the plates jump, Adeil let out a string of curse words that would've made Draco Malfoy blush. Zephlin turned around with owl-eyes and looked at the girl in shock. The blonde smiled apologetically at the black-haired girl. "Sorry about that. I don't like him."

"I know what you mean," Zephlin managed to say, surprised at the fact that someone was talking to her.

Before their conversation could go any further, the table between them was suddenly covered with food, but different food compared to the norm. Besides the usual meat and vegetables, were some strange delicatessens that looked strangely French. Adeil smiled slightly at the quiet girl in front of her, who was trying not to look at the exchange student whilst piling her plate with food. "So, what's your name?" she asked suddenly.

Zephlin barely glanced up from her plate and murmured, "Zephlin Vanadet."

"Zephlin Vanadet," the foreign girl repeated. "Very original name. Mean anything?" Zephlin shrugged her shoulders, which didn't annoy the other girl. "I take it you're not a very talkative person? That's ok. I'm warming up to you anyway."

Zephlin dropped her fork in surprise. "What? You like me? Already?"

"Yep. Why? Not use to it?"

"Well, no. I don't exactly have any fri--" she started to say, but was cut off.

"Then I'll be your very first one. Want a frog leg?" Zephlin's eyes nearly bulged out of her head, making Adeil laugh. "Yep, we're going to be the very best of friends, Zeph."

Zephlin smiled at her new friend, a smile that was very genuine, and suddenly she felt a little better than her usual self.

---~~*~~---

Conversation for the rest of the meal was very little, but both girls enjoyed the other's company nonetheless. Just as Zephlin was finishing off her desert, Malcolm and Graham walked passed - with Elijah. Malcolm smirked at Zephlin, while Elijah grinned at Adeil's back. Adeil didn't turn around once but, from the look on Zephlin's face, knew who it was anyway. Earlier on during the meal, she had spotted Elijah talking, and looking down the table at the two girls, to two boys, one with black hair and the other with brown.

Zephlin let out a small groan and looked at Adeil. With Elijah on his side, Malcolm would sure to be around a lot more. Adeil glanced at the retreating figures before facing Zephlin again. "Looks like Elijah's made some friends."

"Yeah. With the two people I hate most," Zephlin muttered, more to herself.

"Well then, it's a bit of a pity he's friends with them, and you're friends with me. I can tell it's gonna be one hell of-a four months," Adeil commented, stuffing a potato into her mouth.

"Tell me about it," Zephlin moaned, dropping her head onto her crossed arms.

"Hey! Cheer up! At least I know of ways to get rid of E-bug," Adeil humoured.

Zephlin laughed into her arms. "What about MG-bugs?"

"Oh, we shall see," Adeil said slyly, eyeing Zephlin. "But why don't you tell me about this little...feud of yours and I'll tell you about mine. That way, we'll know each other's stories."

Zephlin lifted her head and sighed. "Ok, but not here. Too many ears," she growled, glaring pointedly at the boy beside Adeil, who was trying not so hard to look innocent. Adeil laughed and got up. When she did, several eyes from all four tables followed. Glaring around, the eyes dropped down.

On the way to the library, the 'Gryffindor Trio', who were incidentally going to the same place, intercepted them. The redhead snared pointedly at the tense Zephlin, to which Adeil simply raised an eyebrow at. The bushy-haired girl just sighed and the brunette boy just stared at the white-haired girl. Ignoring them all, she pushed Zephlin in the back, egging her onwards. She knew there was something between the redhead and the Slytherin, but decided not to interfere as she knew no details.

"God, I hate them!" Zephlin hissed once they were out of earshot. "They think they're go great! Especially Ron! Harry's and whatshername are alright - for Gryffindors."

"Don't let them get to you, Zeph," Adeil said soothingly.

Before she came to Hogwarts, Adeil had read about the school, for further information. She was glad she did, for she knew the rivalry between Gryffindor's and Slytherin's. What she had just seen was something that ran a little deeper.

Following the other girl, Adeil noticed that the corridors seemed to have grown darker, only candles lighting the way. Zephlin spoke to the stone wall, which slid open to reveal the Slytherin common room. Other Slytherin's were lounging around or doing their homework. Adeil also noted a pile of black ashes in the middle of the floor. Sinking into one of the available seats, Adeil looked at Zephlin, who was staring intently into the fire. Feeling a little uncomfortable, Adeil looked at the black-haired girl questioningly. Before she could open her mouth, another exchange student came over.

"Adeil, I vant to introduce you to mes amies," the foreign student said, her insertion of French into the sentence was a force of habit. Adeil looked over at the stoic Zephlin, who paid no attention to the other girl. Shrugging her shoulders, Adeil got up and walked away, but not before seeing the look of sadness reflected in Zephlin's eyes.

"Don't worry, I'll be back," she whispered assuringly, then walked off.

As a group of Slytherin's fawned over the white-haired girl, Zephlin stared off into the fire once again. Muting out all sources of life except for the dancing flames, she didn't hear someone sitting in Adeil's vacant seat. Being drawn deeper into the warm colours of the fire, her thoughts swam around in her head. The flames never looked so beautiful and as she slowly drifted into the world of oblivious, the tap on her shoulder brought her back into the world of the living. Snapping her head to the side, she was surprised to see the white-haired girl staring at her.

"Back so soon?" Zephlin asked snidely.

If Adeil was hurt by Zephlin's tone, she didn't show it. "Yes. They were being a bunch of snobs. Telling me not to hang around with you."

Zephlin looked at her, confused. "Why are you here then?"

"Zeph, You're my friend, and I don't desert my friends, no matter what others think of then. Well, actually, I would do something but that's beside the point."

Zephlin said nothing for she was surprised at the white-haired girl's statement. Adeil looked at the other girl worryingly. "Are you ok?"

But before Zephlin could answer, an accented voice interrupted. "Bon soir, mesdames."

Zephlin looked up and gave a crocked smile, although her eyes showed resentment. "Um, hello."

Elijah beamed and looked down at Adeil, who had closed her eyes and was muttering French curses. "Ad--"

"Part, Elijah!" Adeil said commandinly, in French.

"Il n'y a pas de besoin d'être grossier, Adeil," Elijah replied, ignoring what she said.

Adeil opened her eyes and glared into the fire. "C'est ma nature. Maintenant part!"

"Que si je fais-il le besoin pas à?" he countered, smiling.

"Alors je vous ferai!" she growled.

"Vous n'etes pas heureux que je suis dans la maison pareile comme vous?" he asked, ignoring her threat.

Sarcastically, she quipped, "Enchanté."

"Content vous êtes, mon cher," he replied, catching the sarcasm. His hand sneaked his way onto her shoulder.

"Elijah," she hissed.

"Oui, cher?" he asked too innocently

"Do you remember what happened to the other guy who touched me at Beauxbatons?"

"Oui. Oh, désolé. N'arrivera pas encore" he said, removing his hand.

"Better not," she hissed.

"Bien, je suis d'au lit. Bon nuit, mesdames," he said to both of them and walked off. Zephlin let out her breath she had been unknowingly holding.

"And good ridence," Adeil muttered, looking at his retreating figure.

Letting the comfortable silence come between the again, Zephlin's focus was drawn back to the flames. The confrontation between the two exchange students played in her mind. Although most of it was in French, which she didn't understand one bit, Zephlin thought it a bit strange that Adeil didn't have a French accent. Looking over at the white-haired girl, she finally took in a good look at what her new-found friend looked like. The long white hair cascaded over slim shoulders, dropping an inch below the shoulders and was only held up by a black head band. The pale blue robes that the other witch wore would've made the girl appear pale, if not for the light tan. Because of the reflecting fire, Zephlin could not determine the girl's eye colour but, as if the other read her mind, Adeil turned her head and smiled at Zephlin. Her dark brown eyes held no sparkle nor shine, and had a faint hint of redness in them. An unusual colour that made Zephlin think of contact lenses.

"No, they're my real eye colour. Pity I can't say the same about my hair," Adeil said, making Zephlin more suspicious about her telepathy theory.

"Why do you not have an accent like the others?" Zephlin suddenly blurted out, totally off topic.

Adeil laughed. "I was wondering when you'd get around to asking that. Well, my dear friend, I do not come from the Northern Hempishere. I hail from the far corner of the South Pacific. Ever heard of a country called Australia?" Zephlin thought on it for a second before nodding.

"Yep, well, I come from the tiny little country beside Australia." Zephlin stared at her blankly, making the other girl laugh. "Didn't think so. I'm from New Zealand."

"New Zealand? Wh--" The 'where's that?' question died on her tongue as she realised that question was already answered. "But how did you, well, come to be at Beauxbatons if you live in New Zealand?"

"Two words: O.E."

"But aren't you a little too young to be doing an overseas experience?" Zephlin asked in surprise.

"Well, now. It's not exactly an overseas experience, more like an overseas school experience. My parents thought I would learn more overseas. And seeing that I am quite fluent in French, they sent me to Beauxbatons," Adeil explained, then leaned over arm of the chair, an interested look in her eyes. "Enough about me. More about this little...'thing' of yours, for that is what you were going to explain to me, was it not?"

Zephlin sat back into her seat and stared back into the fire. After a few seconds, she closed her eyes and sighed heavily. "Well, it started about this time last year. My fourth year at Hogwarts. The fateful year that I..."
