KINEMATICAL ASSESSMENTS ON ROCK SLOPES

AT THE KAPIKAYA (MALATYA) DAM SİTE

In this study, it was aimed to kinematical assesment on rock slopes the at the Kapıkaya dam site. For this purpose, geological map of the dam site, the cores obtained from boreholes and discontuniuties in rock mass were examined and specimens were collected for laboratory tests. According to the cores obtained from the boreholes, the diabases are in character of jointed rock mass. The properties of discontinuity planes in the diabases at the dam site were investigated and evaluated by streographic projection technique and tree major joint sets are determined. These joint sets are of close-moderate spacing, low-very low persistence, moderately wide, rough-undulatig, slightly weathered and filled by calcite. According to the results of shearing tests the joints have cohesion  of 9.37 kPa and friction angle of 41o. According to Barton ampirical failure criterion joints have cohesion  of 50 kPa and friction angle of 52o.

The slopes at the Kapıkaya dam site was evaluated using kinematic analysis and possible slope orientations for different types instability were determined. According to these studies, the rock slopes with more than 60° dip angle are considered as potentially susceptible to planar, wedge and toppling failure.
