The Geotechnical Investigation of the Tuffites

in North of Yazihan (Malatya/Turkey)

In this study, the geotechnical properties of tuffites at the Boztepe Dam site have been investigated. The Boztepe Dam has been constructed on the Yağca Stream in about 10 km east of Yazıhan (Malatya/Turkey) and its earth filled dam. The foundation rocks are tuffite and basalt, which are Upper Jurasic – Lower Crateous age, at the dam site.  The dominant orientation, spacing, persistence, aperture, roughness, weathering and filling of the discontinuity surfaces in the tuffite were investigated in field studies. The uniaxial, triaxial and indirect tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio unit weight and porosity of the tuffite were determined in the laboratory. The bearing capacity of the tuffite at the dam site calculated using the Hoek-Brown empirical failure criterion.
