Geotechnical Investigation of the Diversion Tunnel Alignment at the Boztepe Dam (Malatya/Turkey) The basalt and tuffite which are belonging to Yamadag volcanics (Middle-Upper Miocene) out crop in vicinity of the diversion tunnel. The basalt and the tuffite were classified according to the Geomechanics (RMR) and Q rock classification systems in the diversion tunnel alignment. The type of excavation, stand up time and the type of support were determined for the basalt and the tuffite. At the diversion tunnel alignment zoning was done according to Unified Alteration Index (UAI). The relationships between the alteration degree and improve methods were examined. According to the Geomechanics rock classification (RMR) system, the extremely alterated tuffite between 0.00-105.00 m is in poor, the moderately alterated basalt between 105.00-240.00 m is in good and the highly alterated basalt between 240.00-565.00 m is in fair rock class. According to the Q rock classification system the tuffite between 0.00-105.00 m is in very poor, the basalt between 105.00-240.00 m is in fair and the basalt between 240.00-565.00 m is in poor rock class.
