zachary d street:

Weeping for the Wasteland

I wandered into a wasteland
where pines once grew like monuments to God.
Severed stumps, executed, standing like gravestones
Branches, lifeless and leafless,
Scattered like dead flowers.

It began to rain.
Your tears falling over me,
Weeping for the massacre.
Your anger thundered and flashed on the horizon
lighting the gravestones like ghosts.

I stood there and let your sadness
soak into my skin.
My tears merging with yours
My heart thundering like your voice.

Now I understand the rain.
