Internal Breathing

coal and concrete
steel splits the soil like roots
I catch a glimpse of green
slicing through the sidewalk
and my heart is on its knees
peeling back the asphalt
like unatural skin
hoping for a glimpse of Eden
the scent of soil escapes
and breaks the smog and cigarettes
just long enough
for my soul to take a breath
