First National Flag

This is the first flag displayed on this web page that shows an artist's conception of the flag held by a color sergeant. I really enjoy this picture and highly recommend the book from which it came.

This drawing of a variation of the First National Flag is taken from the Men-At-Arms Series - Flags of the American Civil War 1: Confederate; Martin Windrow, Editor; Color Plate by Rick Scollins; text by Philip Katcher; and published by Osprey, Reed Consumer Books Ltd. The drawing represents a flag captured at Gettysburg from an unknown unit. This variation shows the stars in a somewhat unusual pattern. The text states that the Infantry color sergeant is wearing a first pattern Richmond depot jacket. The star worn with the three stripes was "officially designated for an ordnance sergeant but widely worn by color sergeants."

This flag graphic provided by Graham Leonard. Thank you so much for sending this graphic, Graham.

 The Third National Flag

This magnificent 3rd National flag was made for the last Confederate Governor of Virginia, "Extra Billy" Smith. (When I first saw this one, I almost cried)

My thanks go to David Barnett of the SCV Col. L. L. Polk Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
