About Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is undoubtly one of the world`s most popular detectives.
According to holmes researches, he was born in 1854 in Yorkshire. When he was in his early twenties, he began to solve mysteries using his observation and deduction ability. he solved his first mystery in 1874 - a story knowm as the Gloria Scott. In 1878 he began his professional career as a consultant detective. In 1881 he met Dr. John H. Watson, and they decided to share rooms in 221b Baker Sreet
( which at the time had only 80 buildings!). Watson became his close friend and a devoted biographer. He also accompanied him at many of his adventures. From the late 1880s to early 1890s, Holmes devoted himself to breaking the criminal organization of his bitter enemy, Professor Moriarty. Later, he also worked for Queen Victoria and in 1902 he refused an offer of knighthood. He retired in 1903 and devoted himself to breeding bees. He did, however return to use his sharp detective skills when the German war approached, and led to the arrest of Prussian spymaster Von Bork.

Holmes`s charachter is based upon Josheph Bell Doyle, a lecturer at the Edinburgh Infirmary, and a relative of Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes was a violinist and an amatuer boxer. He had an extremely sharp brain, but was addicted to drugs, mostly cocaine. He is believed to have great knowledge of perfumes, tobaccos, and chemistrey. He was also very fond of art and history, especially the Middle Ages. Holmes also published a few monographs, mostly about tobaccos.

A lot was written about Sherlock Holmes`s devoted biographer, Dr. John H. Watson. He Was born in 1852, and got his medical degree from the London University in 1878. In 1880 he was wounded in Afganistan in the service of her Majesty, and returned to England. His joint living with Holmes were interrupted three times due to Watson`s marriages, and at least three more times for unknown reasons. They were finally seperated in the early 1900s, as Watson carried on in his clinic, and Holmes devoted himself to breeding bees.

Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, was born on May22nd in Edinburgh. During the years 1876-1891 he studied medicine at the Edinburgh University. After receiving his degree he served as a ship`s doctor on a voyage to the West African Indies. In 1882 he began to practice medicine in Plymouth and later moved to Southsea, where his writing career took off. The first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet appeared in 1887 in the Beeton`s Christmas Annual, and the Sign of Four appeared in 1890. In 1889 a non-Holmes novel, Micha Clarke was published. Doyle got married in in 1885 to Louise Hawkings, and in 1890 he moved to Vienna to study eye medicine. He returned to London in 1891, but his practice failed and he devoted himself to writing. In July 1891 he began to write a series of Holmes stories for the Strand, beginning with A scandal in Bohemia. His stories became popular, but eventually he got tired of Holmes, as he wrote to his mother in 1893: "Holmes takes my mind for better things." Doyle "killed" Holmes in 1894 and travelled to Egypt in 1895 where he wrote The Tragedy of Korsko. When fighting broke between the British and the Derwishes, he bacame the war correspondent for the Westminster Gazette. He returned to London and wrote more novels:Rodney Stone, A duet with an Occasional Chorus, and Uncle Bernac. In 1900 he sailed to South Africa to serve in an hospital as fighting broke there. He then wrote the pamphlet The War in South Africa - Case and Conduct, which resulted in his being knighted in 1902. Holmes was eventually brought back to life in 1903, and his adventures had been written until 1927. In 1906 Doyle`s wife died, and he was remarried in 1907 to Jean Leckie. In 1912 another famous hero, professor Challanger was introduced in the book the Lost World. Professor Challanger appeared later in the Poison Belt. As World War I broke in 1914 Conan Doyle joined the Volunteer Force, and in 1915 he began writing the six volume history of The British Campaign in France and Flanders which was completed in 1920. Towards the end of his life, Doyle took intrest in spiritualism and psychic matters. He died on July 7 1930, shortly after an heart attack.
