In Egypt wigs were usually used by women and men of different classes to protect the head from the agonizing sun, at the same time they were a symbol of social status.  Only the rich could purchase human hair-made wigs being that they were the most expensive. The next one in quality was done with human, horse, sheep and goat hairs all togetheror one kind was used to make the whole wig. The cheapest one was entirely made with vegetable fibers. Braids and eleborate designs were done to the wigs, extensions were also added. Some of the wigs found in excavations still have their original designs which shows the fine craftmenship. Men and women used wigs over their head no matter how much hair they had of their own. Most shaved their head so the use of a wig would be more comfortable.
