The egyptian man used as much make-up as a woman. During the New Kingdom both sexes used kohl and soot, these were used as an eye liner but also as a protectant from eye infections. Green eye shadow was made out of a mineral derived from copper called malaquite. Eye brows were also lined with gray, green or black paint. Blush and lipstick both were made of crushed red ocre. It is thought that the red ocre was mixed with animal fat to make it creamy instead of dusty. Henna was mostly used to paint the toes and fingers of the recently dead wealthy. Nails were painted with a red pigment and black mascara also existed. Other ingredients related to make-up and lotions were nut or olive oil, animal fat, flowers and seeds. Lotion and make-up was stored in vases, spoon-like utensils and containers decorated with gods, flowers or the common lotus blossom. All of the make-up was applied to the skin with a thin, wet, woodstick.
