Hi, my name is Teri Smith and I am currently teaching at Nelson Middle School as a 7th grade teacher for our English program. I have been a part of this program for three years now and am working towards my masters in Speech Pathology at Western Michigan University. My present goals are working with the students in our Junior High, to be a part of the after school “Book of the Month Club.” My idea for this venture came from my love for books and how to share this interest of mine with my students as well as my peers in an informal setting. We have most recently finished up the fourth book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, “The Goblet of Fire.” While this project of mine started out slow it now has continued to grow and the students have shared many different prospective and thoughts to the group. This has been a learning experience for everyone involved.
My professional goals reach beyond the classroom setting as an instructor, I hope that by continuing my education the knowledge that I will occur will bring a wealth of information and create an environment filled with learning and growth for my students. The reason I am here is for my students and to see them make it in life with the best education possible. My goal is to use all the resources available to me to achieve what is best for my students. By doing this, my career choice, as a teacher will have served the purpose it was intended to.
This year I have added to my English classes a Shakespeare segment, which in-tales studying the history as well as the language with which he wrote his novels in. So far we have been successful through our reading comprehension and the shared posters that each student made by using a quote from one of his plays and explaining the underlying meaning behind it.
Well, I can honestly say I have been busy but there is still much growth that will continue to go in my classroom. The delight in my students learning experience has been a joy and one I intend to keep on going with, When you have a moment feel free to stop in and see the excitement that the English language can bring into our everyday lives.
