Summary | During the Meiji Restoration in Japan, there was one hitokiri who killed mercilessly and just the thought of him made peoples' blood boil: Himura Battousai. However, the show takes place ten years later, when Himura has become a rurouni (wanderer), has taken a vow not to kill again, and has abandoned his nickname Battousai for preference of his real name Kenshin. He meets up with the head of a dojo, Kamiya Kaoru, and others who visit the dojo regularly. But Japan is still not completely in peace, and Kenshin must fight still to protect his friends. Genre: action/comedy. |
Plot | There's lots of filler that the animators put in while waiting for Watsuki to write more of the manga, but otherwise, the plot is great! |
Characters | All of the characters are well-developed and grow and change throughout the series. |
Humor | Lots of humor, which is absolutely necessary for us to keep our sanity when we watch the emotional battle between the rurouni and hitokiri. And Kenshin has his priceless "oro" that could make anyone laugh ^_^ |
Animation | Not exceptional; not bad. |
Music | Rurouni Kenshin has the best BGMs (background music) that I have heard. The theme song, Freckles, really sucks, but there are a number of endings, all performed by popular jrock/jpop bands that are much better. But they're sometimes way too cheery for the exciting, serious episode we just saw. |
Japanese voices and subtitles | Kenshin's voice is done by a woman, which may bother some people, but it's one talented woman! She can do everything from squeaking "oro" to talking as the heartless Battousai- and make it all work. Everybody else has a fitting voice too. |
Dubbed voices | Plug your ears when anyone but Yahiko speaks. Especially when Kenshin's pathetically unemotional voice or Kaoru's annoying voice comes on. |
Bishounen factor | Trust me, Rurouni Kenshin has lots of good-looking guys. You wouldn't believe that a guy drew them. |
Cutesy factor | Nothing's cuter than a chibi-Kenshin. Yep, that's right, the oldest of the leading characters is the cutest ^_^ |
Notes | The manga artist is Nobuhiro Watsuki and Kenshin's voice is Suzukaze Mayo. The ending Tactics is performed by the band The Yellow Monkey. Another ending, Heart of Sword, is performed by my favorite J-rock band, TM Revolution. I have only watched the first 31 episodes of this. |
