THE OUTLAW AND HIS WIFE «««« Sweden A criminal seeks work at the rural farm of a wealthy widow. The two fall in love and are forced to run away and hide in the mountains. An uneven drama that covers issues both social and spiritual. It was the first to use locations and landscape expressively and has been much revered. The tinting harms the visuals and there's too many subtitles, so no mood or rhythm is ever completely allowed to set in. But it's always impressive for what it's trying to achieve, and occasionally also for what it manages to. dir: Victor Sjöström cast: Victor Sjöström, Edith Erastoff, John Ekman |
