Oriyen - The Search

"Lei, quit!" Oriyen hissed to his fire-lizard as they made their way down to the lower caverns. The young Harper's son had been waking up all most 3 hours earlier then any one else in the hold for the past two turns, to watch the sun rise. It was the only time the Silent Harper's son would have time to himself.

The thin, brown hair, green eye boy walk out of the hold and in to the runner fields. The chilly morning air was almost unbearable for most but it never had bother him for the 3 years of his life he'd spent here at Wing Crest hold. As he walk out a little further one of the many racing runners came up and greeted him something that happen often.

A strong wind came up suddenly and rustled the tall grass under foot. After the first runner greeted him, others soon followed suit. After this had pasted, Oriyen made his way to the large rock a little farther out in the pasture and climbed to his usual place on the rock just before the sun stared to rise.

Once the sun had almost fully risen, something strange happened. A dragons shadow cast it self over the runner pasture. Oriyen looked up just in time to watch a large blue past over head.

"A dragon here?" Oriyen quietly ask to no on in particular. Lei and the runners the only ones hearing the question. Seeing the dragon setting down only a few dragon lengths from the rock, Oriyen's curiosity got the better of him and went to find out why a dragon would bother coming out so far to Wing Crest.

He ran the main distance between where he had been and where the dragon had landed. He made good time and halted when he was around a dragon length from the blue, when he realized the dragon had started watching him with grate interest.

Lei, his small bronze landed on his shoulder, Lei's eyes' burned a fiery red. As Oriyen finished walking the last dragon length, he found a blue eye man watching him, with some amusement.

"Hello there what's some one hardly 15 turns of age doing up so early." It was more a statement then a question.

"Ah," and a very annoyed chirrup from Lei, was that came as a reply.

W'ryn he's the one…

"I'm W'ryn, my Sylth says you'd be a good candidate. Your?"

"Oriyen, and this is Lei."

"The Harper Dailyn's boy from Wing Crest?"

"Ah…yes sir."

" Well then Oriyen any interest in becoming a candidate for the clutch at Dawn Sister's Weyr?" W'ryn asked knowing even if the boy said no his father would have him stand at lest once.

"Well I don't know sir." Oriyen said politely.

"'Don't know?' and by the first egg please stop calling me 'sir"'

"Um…I guess I could try once I've all ways thought dragons where wonderful. I just never considered I'd ever be searched. In addition, mother always said it's not wise to dream of some thing that has a one in 1'000 chance of happening. Therefore, I just never thought of what I'd do if it happened." Oriyen said somewhat in a rush.

"Very well then return to the hold gather what you want to bring with you. Inform your father you’ve been searched, I'll come for you in two hours, Agreed?" W'ryn said before he started to mount Sylth. He then waited for the green-eyed boy to reply.

"I'll do so, sir," Oriyen said. He then moved a good distance away so Sylth could take to the sky.

Oriyen sent Lei to wake his father as soon as they set foot within the hold. Knowing it would take some time for his father to be completely awake. He then headed straight to his room to pack.

He did remembered that many people packed there best but remembered people being told to pack cloths that they didn't mind getting ruined by the few searches that had happened. However, the last search at Wing Crest had been when he was only 12. He finally decided to pack two sets of his nice cloths but the rest where cloths he wore on a day to day basis and what happened to them really did not matter.

He brought out an old bag that had been his mothers. Moreover, started putting the cloths in the bag. Halfway though the packing his elder sister Katilya entered his small room.

"Oriyen? Oriyen by the first egg what are you doing?" Katilya exclaimed.

"Packing…" He simply replied. Not letting her presence brake his concentration on what he was doing.

"I can see that but what for?" Katilya said, as she caught his hand in her own as he reached for the last pile of cloths. "Now Oriyen I don't know what's going on but I want you to tell me what's going on right now." She stated gently pulling him over to the cot and taking a set on it, then beckoning him to sit next to her.

"Well, I was searched this morning for the clutch a Dawn Sisters," Oriyen said quietly. "What?" Katilya said in surprise. "Oriyen you're not kidding are you?" Oriyen shook his head no.

"No I'm not kidding, Kat." Oriyen then said. "The rider said he'd return with in two hours it's already been around one and a half. I need to finish here then talk to father."

"Ok but I'm going to help you finish this up then I'm coming with you when you talk to father." Oriyen opened his mouth to protest but Katilya hushed him. "And I won't have any of that I'm helping you and that's final." Oriyen sighed in defeat knowing to well his sister would not take a no.

Once they had finished, they headed down to the lower caverns where their father most likely would be at this time of morning. They soon found him sitting at a table sipping some kalh. Lei and his own brown siting on the table watching him talk with one of his friends.

"Father do you think we could speak to you alone?" Oriyen asked. His father nodded then asked his friend if he could finish the conversation some other time.

"So what are you two wanting to talk to me about?" There father Dailyn asked, once the two of them had sat down on the bench across from him.

"Well I was told by a blue rider from Dawn Sisters by the name of W'ryn that his dragon had searched me. They should be here soon to take me to Dawn Sisters. I know this is a little abrupt so I am hoping you don't mind. " Oriyen said. The father almost choked when he heard all this.

"Wh…at? Searched? When?"

"Early this morning right after sunrise."

"Your not mad are you father?" Katilya ask in a somewhat concerned tone.

"No not at all!" Their father said in a happy tone. "This is wonderful news! It's been generations since our family has had any one searched!" The father seemed to be very, very pleased about all this moment was cut short when a voice from a watchtower announced there was a dragon approaching.

Many people rushed out side to great the grate best of pern and his rider. Oriyen and his family followed the main crowed after a while of sitting and talking some more.

They reached the outskirts of large crowed that had gather around the blue. As they did so Sylth turned his head and watched them. Oriyen went ahead of his father and sister slowly but surely he reached where W'ryn waited.

"I was wondering where you where! I though you might have changed your mind about becoming a candidate." W'ryn told Oriyen when he saw him. "So you ready to go?"

"I am, I just need my things." Oriyen replied. He then realized he had forgotten them in his room.

"You forgot this, I think it's some thing you'll need," Katilya said holding out Oriyen's bag.

"Ah…Thank you Kat." Oriyen said taking his bag from her.

"You're welcome I didn't want my little brother going off with out any thing. Would I?" Katilya said in a joking manner.

"No I guess not," Oriyen said somewhat embarrassed.

"Don't prolong with the good byes you'll see them at the hatching. It should happen soon. Maybe within this seven day." W'ryn told Oriyen.

"Bye, Kat, Father, I guess I'll see you when the eggs hatch." Oriyen said, as he stared to fallow W'ryn over where Sylth was. Nevertheless, before he was able to take one step his sister caught him in her arms.

"I'm going to miss you Oriyen, good luck at the Weyr." Katilya said with tears in her eyes.

"Come on Kat it's not like you'll never see me again. I'll be fine and I'll write some letters to you and have Lei bring them to you ok?" Oriyen said as he hugged his sister back. He then broke off the embrace and let W'ryn help him up on to Sylth's back. Once Sylth took to the air, he waved 'good bye' one last time before they went between.
