Passage

When the mountains
begin to cry the tears of their melted snow
do they know they are vulnerable in the
revealing of their majesty?

When the earth
prepares for a great rumbling quake
as it shifts to assume
a more comfortable position in aging
does she know
that some will die in its wake?

When the storms of nature
prepare to blow in with a cleansing rain
and the thunders roar
do they know
the birds hear of their visit
before the torment begins?

When the desert
opens itself to the bloom of its beautiful flowers
and the color of  barren-ness changes to brilliance
does it know
that human eyes
gaze with awe at the beauty?

When the valleys
flood with the mystery of sun and rain in the spring
and all that grow there appears overnight
do they know
that there is no image
greater than the vision of them?

When I dream of your journey
and know the doorways of passage for you
do you see
my shadow walking in loving you?

I hear the roar of the thunder
feel the winds of change
death in the shifting
the kiss of fresh rains in new growth
and emerge from barren space
to the beauty
in you
in passage.

for all
who walk the pathways
of discovery
