Winter Haven - Lakeland Competition
March 1st
& March 8th, 2006


The first half of the second annual competition between the Lakeland Senior Softball Club & the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club took place on March 1, 2006 at the Southwest Complex in Lakeland.  The three Lakeland teams each won against the three Winter Haven teams.

The Lakeland team managed by Don Schroeder defeated the Joel Freedman Winter Haven team 24-13.

Randy Lane went 4 for 5, Jim Laffoon went 3 for 4, & Doug McLellan went 3 for 4 for the Winter Haven team.

The Lakeland team managed by Gordy Mathison defeated the Fred Dampier Winter Haven team 17-14.

The Winter Haven team tied the score at 7 with a 4 run 3rd inning, gave up the lead in the 5th inning, tied again in the 7th inning at 14, but gave up 3 runs to Lakeland in the bottom of the 8th.  Lakeland held Winter Haven scoreless in the final frame to win the game 17-14.
Denny Shaffer went 4 for 4 with three triples, Bill Ayer went 4 for 4 with one double, alternate player Bill Evans went 3 for 4, & starting pitcher Rich Palmer went 3 for 4.
Relief pitcher George Summers recorded the loss for Winter Haven.

The Lakeland team managed by Jack Williams defeated the Dick Wilhelm Winter Haven team 17-13.

The Winter Haven team tied the score at 8 with one run in the 4th inning on a double by alternate player Frank Miller followed by a double later in the inning by alternate player Larry Williamson.  The Winter Haven team relinquished the lead in the 5th inning & lost by a score of 17-13.
Ron Thompson went 5 for 5, Larry Williamson went 3 for 3 with a sacrifice fly, Elmer Black went 4 for 5 with one triple, Frank Miller went 3 for 4 with one double & one triple, & Bob Lewis went 3 for 4.
Dick Wilhelm received the loss for the Winter Haven team.

For the Lakeland team, Jose Agosto went 3 for 3 with one double & a sacrifice fly & Russ King went 3 for 3 with a sacrifice fly.  John Ormsby also played with the Lakeland team & batted 2 for 4 with one triple.



The second half of the competition was held at the Diamond Plex fields in Winter Haven on March 8, 2006.
Winter Haven won 2 of the 3 games.

The Winter Haven team managed by Dick Wilhelm defeated the Gordy Mathison Lakeland team 25-21.

Chuck Duff went 5 for 5 with one homer, alternate player Bill Evans went 5 for 5 with one homer, Ron Augenstein went 4 for 4, John Fulton went 4 for 5, starting & winning pitcher Dick Wilhelm went 4 for 5, Ron Thompson went 4 for 5, & alternate player Larry Williamson went 3 for 4.

The Winter Haven team managed by Fred Dampier defeated the Don Schroeder Lakeland team 30-21.

The Winter Haven team rallied for 8 runs in the 3rd inning to tie the score at 14.  Every player batted in the inning as 8 hits were recorded.  The Lakeland team took a one run lead in the 4th inning, but Winter Haven scored 5 in the next inning to take & keep the lead.  The final score was 30-21.

Fred Dampier went 4 for 4 with one double, three homers, & one walk.  Ken King hit for the cycle as he went 4 for 5.  Denny Shaffer went 4 for 5 with one double & one triple, Don Erb went 4 for 5 with one double, Cal Leigh went 4 for 5, & starting pitcher Rich Palmer went 4 for 5.  Relief pitcher Jerry Witter recorded the win for the Winter Haven team.

The Lakeland team managed by Jack Williams defeated the Joel Freedman Winter Haven team 30-13.

Ted Taylor went 4 for 5 & Elmer Wilcox went 3 for 4.  Jim Laffoon hit a homer for Winter Haven.

For the Lakeland team, Russ King went 4 for 5.  John Ormsby also played with the Lakeland team & batted 3 for 5 & Jose Agosto went 3 for 5.
