Make dough for Ethel's Sugar Cookies using vanilla for flavoring. Divide dough in half. Blend 2 sq. unsweetened chocolate (2 oz.) melted and cooled, into one half. Chill.
Roll remaining dough into an oblong, 12 x 9". Roll chocolate dough same size; lay on top of white. Roll together until 3/16" thick. Roll up tightly, beginning at wide side. Chill again.
Heat oven to 400º (mod. hot.) Cut 1/8" thick slices; place on
ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
Makes 7 doz. cookies.

enjoyed them.)
Ethel's Sugar Cookies
Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, and flavoring thoroughly. Stir flour, baking powder, and salt together, blend in.
Chill at least 1 hour.
Heat oven to 400º (mod. hot). Roll dough 1/8" thick on lightly floured board. Cut with 3" cooky cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 6 to 8 min., or until cookies are a delicate golden color.
