James Wheeler, 19 m Labourer Somerset Prot both Came into Depot, later left with own resources arrived 21 July 1844 from London and Cork on the Dale Park
Charlotte Wheeler, 19 f wife arrived 21 July 1844 from London and Cork on the Dale Park From http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/WHEELER/2001-11/1005306751, Date: Fri, 9 Nov 2001 I have the following information...maybe someone can use it. Regards, Michele Shaw The register of immigrants aboard the ship states that they were both aged 19, Protestant, could read and write and came from Somerset. James was a contract labourer indentured to Messrs Carter and Bonus at a bounty of 18 pounds and 14 shillings. The immigrant register actually mis-spells their surname as WHEELER but other sources indicate that this in fact was JAMES AND CHARLOTTE WHELLER. Mr Edward Henty one of the founders of Portland Bay, Vicotria met the couple at Port Phillip and took them to Portland. It was in the Henty home at Portland that James and Charlotte had their first child, ANNE LYDIA PERRY WHELLER. She was born 5 September 1844, less than 2 months after their arrival in Australia, Charlotte having been pregnant during the long sea voyage from England and also while travelling to Portland. Soon after the birth of Anne the young family set sail from Portland for Adelaide aboard the cutter "Governor Gawler". Their arrival on 23 January 1845, 9 years after the founding of the colony was noted in the newspaper the "Register" of 24 January as the arrival of Mr and Mrs WELLER and child. Again the surname has been mis-spelled, but other sources confirm that this was James and Charlotte Wheller. On their arrival they moved to Penwortham 10 kilometres wouth of Clare in the mid north of South Australia to join Charlotte's brother MANUEL PERRY who had arrived earlier. It was here that the young family settled and two sons were born. They were JON ROBERT PERRY WHELLER born on 26 October 1846 and JAMES EMANUEL WHELLER born 8 September 1849. Shortly after the birth of James Emanuel there is record of a land grant to James Wheller on December 31, 1849. He was granted 80 acres of land, Section 99 in the Hutt River Survey, County of Stanley. The grant was under the hand and seal of Sir Henry Edward Fox Young, Lieutenant Governor of South Australia for the sum of Eighty Pounds. Interestingly one of the witnesses to the grant was a Charles STURT, possibly the famous explorer. Then just 6 months after the birth of his second son and 3 months after the land grant James Wheller died at Penworthham on 8 March 1850 at the age of 23 years (this age I disagree with, mathematically it is incorrect) . His death was attributed to typhus fever. This was reported in the 'Register' of 12 March 1850 and the 'Mercury & SA Sporting Chronicle' of 16 March 1850. The ownership of Section 99 Hutt River Survey was passed to Charlotte Wheller in the will of James Wheller. Also passed to Charlotte was all the moneys in the Union Bank of Australia and all other property belonging to James in England and all monies due in South Australia and in England. Then on 24 September 1850 6 months after her husbands death the widowed Charlotte married Reuben SOLLY giving her children then aged 6,4, & 1 a father. The birth of James Emanuel was in fact registered by his stepfather Reuben Solly on 10 September 1856 when James had just turned 7. | ||||||
