This web site explores the history of vandalism in Sayville and the root causes.
There has been a group of kids in Sayville that provided the nearest thing to justice that Sayville ever saw. These kids were called "The Vandals." This group can be traced back from long before WW2 to the present day. The Vandals were nice kids that took out revenge against the rotten kids of Sayville and their enablers. According to Dr. Stanley Paulsen, a psychologist/criminalologist who studies the root causes of vandalism among children, the Vandals were a natural reaction to the policies of the school district, parents and community leaders. Dr. Paulsen said, "The Vandals were brave kids that filled the vacuum created by inept local policies. For many, the Vandals were a godsend." They filled the same role as the heroes in the movie The Seven Samurai.

Teddy "Teedie" Roosevelt spent summers with his Uncle Robert in Sayville and was an early vandal. He said about those years he was "mischievous" and he abhorred "...injustice and bullying by the strong at the expense of the weak." After a traumatic incident with the bad kids he said, "I started to learn to box." The young Teddy Roosevelt as pictured represented everything that the Vandals were about. In 1876 the future president said to the leader of the Ruffians, "Our way is to defend the weak from the strong." |

Mark of the Squealer: If a kid rats, he gets the mark of the squealer, which are lines that are drawn with a permanent marker from the corners of his mouth to the sides, then down.
The main enemies of the Vandals were the Jocks and the Heads. Allies included the smart kids. A leader of the Vandals once stabbed a leader of the heads and drew blood. As the Vandals were outnumbered, and out of favor of the school they waged a long term guerilla war where they would "rob" lockers, throw rocks though windows late at night, hit and run, and other tactics. The school of course favored the Jocks because of the all important football team and they favored the Heads (Criminals) because they are considered "Special Ed." One administrator at a Sayville school used the semi-retarded heads as enforcers because they could get away with hitting kids and he could not. These criminals who were left back were used as his henchmen to keep order in the school.

There was a car owned by a drug addict in a special ed class. Since the district and state coddles drug addicts, the Vandals took matters into their own hands. The drug addict was on the floor of the car crying, as there is no teacher or policeman to protect him from justice. This picture is not the actual scene, but a representation. |
