Saskatoon 2005

Date: April 29, 2005 - May 1, 2005

First of all, please pardon my silly head for I forgot to bring my gloves and my digital camera. As a result, I did not take any pictures and I did not go to the river bank.

So why am I still writing this webpage?

  • Just I have never been in the snow at the end of April.
  • Just I have never walked in the snow and subzero temperatures for an hour without a down jacket.
  • Just I have never seen Prairie dogs in the sidewalks.

Friday - April 29

I checked the weather forecast that Saskatoon temperature would go below zero during the weekend. So I wore a sweater despite the summer-like feeling in Vancouver. When I landed in Saskatoon, it was snowing lightly. I put on my denim jacket and baby blue scarf matching my baby blue sweater (Am I blue or what?!). Snow did not stick in such dry weather and I managed well. Apparently it snowed heavily the night before.

Later in the afternoon, I equipped myself with an additional hat and went out for a walk around the hotel. How could I had possibly left my gloves at home when my denim jacket does not have side pockets!! Luckily my kind company lent me his gloves. My hands usually do get cold rather quickly. Given the gloves were so big that I could fit 2 fingers into 1 glove-finger, I made a fist inside the glove-palm to keep my fingers warm. In the end, my hands were still frozen.

As soon as the snow fell a bit more, I pulled down my hat to my glasses covering my ears on the side. Don't worry, I could still see the road. Although there weren't too many cars in the street, there barely was concrete sidewalk. We either had to walk on the road or on the grass and muddy fields. But it was the fields that were interesting. Remember when I went to Tucson in March, there were these cute Prairie Dogs? They are everywhere in Saskatoon. Yup, those lawn along the sidewalks. Friday was too cold and we could only see the holes on the ground. I found out from a local later that they are called the Richardson Ground Squirrels. Squirrels? They're much cuter than squirrels. I did pay extra attention as I traversed through the fields because a foot in a hole accidentally could mean a broken leg. Then we also saw this crow stealing food from another bird that has a long tail and makes this beek-beek sound (I forgot the bird's name).

We walked around the neighbourhood looking for a coffee shop in an industrial area. We couldn't find any and just walked back to the hotel. I could hardly believe I was frozen outside for an hour. However, that confirmed to me I shouldn't attempt to go outside at night.

Saturday - April 30

Saturday was just work, sitting down for the whole day, talking and talking around a circular problem. I don't mean to whine in my webpage. The excitement was, the Prairie dogs came out because weather warmed up. In the morning there were snow on the ground but that melted when the sun came out. A few of the Prairie dogs came out chasing one another, hid back into their holes. I couldn't help it but I was just so excited that I sort of jumped around and shouted, "Oh, they're there, so cute..." during our break.

At night when a bunch of Newfoundlanders and folks from the East asked me to join them for a drink in downtown, I had no choice but to decline for I didn't bring the right clothes. The Newfoundlanders of course said, "We're wearing sweaters and denim jackets too." Yeah, I can't stand that... I come from the West....

Sunday - May 1

Weather warmed up Sunday. I was ready to go for a tour but I booked an earlier flight this time.  I guess you could say that, I didn't really took a tour of Saskatoon, I had a tour of the airport and area around the hotel, which is 2 minutes from the hotel haha.
