Interesting Facts:
- Started his acting career in June 1955 in the role of Eurysakes in the Sophocles tragedy "Ajax"
- At 15, he ran away from hom and lived on a freighter of the Dutch Merchant Navy. This nearly year long experience gave him the opportunity to see such places as Pakistan, Canada, Singapore, Siagon and the Persian Gulf.
- During his travels, he mastered several languages including German, French, and Italian
- Working for the "Noorder Compagnie" he worked as a director, costume designer and translator. He adapted "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck for the stage.
- In 1981, won a "Gouden Kalf" (Golden Calf) award for best actor, a Golden Globe in 1988 for "Escape From Sobibor", a best actor award from the Seattle Internation Film Festival for "The Legend of the Holy Drinker". Has also been awarded the "Rembrandt" award, which is the Dutch version a People's Choice award. And in 1999, received the "Best Actor of the Century" award in the Netherlands.
- In a 1992 People magazine readers poll, was among the 50 named as sexiest men alive.
- He is color blind
- The Dutch Mail Service issued a stamp portraying him in one of his most-beloved movies, "Turkish Delight" in 1995
