UWLGBT*Collective

Minutes from meeting of September 11, 2002

Attendance: Kendra, Lindsay, Elishava, Brent, Laurel, Collin, Jōn, Kegan, Nina, Judith, Mackenzie, Chantelle, Michelle, Angie

1.  Welcome back

qKendra and Chantelle are coordinators for this year.

2.  Orientation Drag Show

qDue to miss communications, the Drag show was scheduled to be in the quad on Monday

qThe common consensus of the performers and the collective is to postpone it to a date where we can have the MPR and a little more publicity.

3.  Promotion of the center during orientation week

qPosters have been posted through the school advertising the LGBT* center.

qSafe zone stickers and postering campaign will be a project to work on later in the year, but is too large, and would be too rushed for orientation week.

4.  GAP Bags

qMargaret’s bag to promote CFS, “filling the funding GAP”

qMargaret has asked for any volunteers to come see her

qThe LGBT* center will donate, for the time being, about 3000 condoms, possibly with more one the way.  We will need to order more right away to make sure that we have the stock to supply.

5.  Director/CFS Positions

qBrent is current commissioner for CFS, he represents LGBT organizations on a provincial level.

qBrent and Nina will run together to be co-directors of the UWLGBT* Collective in the October bi-election.  Working together they will provide a female and a male perspective to represent the collective and the queer community within the U of W.

6.  Schedule for the center being open

qWe’re all going to leave our schedules for when we can be in the center to keep it open as often as possible.

7.  Keys

qIhor, the VP of student services, has stated that student organizations shouldn’t have any more than 10 keys.
qNo new keys will be issued right away

8.  Homohop

qThis is the biggest and BEST social ALL YEAR in the entire UWSA.

qAfter much discussion, the collective has decided that November 10 is a good day to hold it, as it is advertised, and issues like end of weekend, services being closed on Sundays, will not affect turnout, and we expect to sell out, yet again, like we always do!!! Cuz we rock!

qThemes:  A list will be started beside the whiteboard, add to the list.

qOur aim is to have posters done by October 1st.

qAt the Homohop Drag Show, MAXINE will be performing (that’s Brent’s Drag Personality), all performances will be group performances.

9.  Answering the Phone “LGBT…”

qAnswering the phones LGBT may be inadvertently outing people.

qAfter much discussion, we have decided to stick with answering the phone “LGBT”, and using our discretion when providing information.  Discretion is the key word.

10.  West Nile and AIDS

qThe West Nile virus is extremely dangerous to people with suppressed immune systems.

qKendra will get in touch with Manitoba Health, Nine Circles, and other health organizations to see if there is any possibility of a pamphlet campaign.

11.  University forms
qIs having Male and Female boxes on university forms too gender specific?  We will inquire to see if the boxes are left blank (i.e., no gender is indicated) will the form still be processed?

12.  Meeting Day

qMany groups meet on Wednesdays, could we meeting day?

qyes, changed to free period on Mondays

13.  The Uniter(gramme)

qCurrently, we do not have a current column in the uniter, but neither does any other student group, but we DO have a slot in the unitergramme, which is good publicity for us and advertises when are where meetings take place.

qCollin has expressed interest in writing an article or two for the uniter.

14.  Peer Support

qCoordinators from all UWSA service groups will meet once a month to discuss what’s going on in their respective groups, and work out ways to help each-other out.

Good Meeting Y’all, see you on MONDAY!!!!
