What we offer our Puppy Buyers
What should I expect to get from UMKIMZULU  when I pick up my puppy?
When you get your puppy, you should get a "puppy packet." Items included should be a contract and/or guarantee, puppy’s health certificate or veterinary record, a pedigree the AKC registration In addition, most breeders will provide you with a couple of days of food, some water if you have to travel a distance and a sample of any medication or heartworm preventative, if necessary. We microchip our puppies and you  will provide you with the information you will need to complete the forms. If you are buying a puppy just as a companion, you will get a  a spay/neuter clause in your contract .. You will also get a change of ownership .
Most reputable breeders make a distinction between "show-quality" and "pet-quality" and price the dogs appropriately . Show-quality means that the dog has no obvious faults that would make it difficult or impossible for the dog to achieve a championship. With Ridgebacks, the most common faults are a defective ridge (too short, less than or more than two crowns) and excessive white. Other faults that might be present are kinked tail or imperfect bite. Faults of this sort are usually cosmetic rather than functional and do not effect the health of the dog. Remember that the breeder is making a decision that a puppy is "show quality" at a very young age (usually seven or eight weeks of age). It takes a fair amount of experience to make these kinds of predictions with any confidence, which is a compelling reason to buy from a breeder who  has considerable experience in the breed .
We keep the breed at heart, this is NOT a hobby for us   . When properly done, the breeding of quality puppies is an expensive proposition.
*Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia has been seen in Ridgebacks  in Australia – the reported incidence has been low, but it is not non-existent.  There is no place for complacency, nor is there place for satisfaction..
Can we prevent hip dysplasia?
By using dogs with good hips for breeding, the breeder will reduce the chance of producing a dog with poor hips.  The hip score for a prospective sire and dam are not the only scores which should be considered - hip scores of relatives should all be considered.
The average score for Rhodesian Ridgebacks in Australian is 6.95 .It is the policy of Umkimzulu to only use dogs of breed average or better in our breeding programme .
*Elbow  Dysplasia
Elbow dysplasia is a very real problem with larger breeds in general . All Dogs used in Umkimzulu’s breeding programme  are required to have their elbows scored before the age of 2 years. X-rays are taken by a  vet and sent off to a specialist to be scored. A score is given to each elbow with a value between 0 and 3 - 0 being perfect and 3 being extremely dysplastic. A perfect score would read 0:0.

It is the policy of Umkimzulu not to use a dog for breeding which have an elbow score of 2:2 or higher. We have a high preference for dogs with  0:0 scores.
