Kaylie stood yet again in a bathroom of the theme park crying. It seemed like deja vu to her except for the fact that the first time she was there it had turned out much better. This time she was alone.
"I, I just can't. I can't do this any more. I'll just go up to him and tell him that I can't deal with anything like this right now. It's too soon. He'll understand. He always understands. And he's always there for me. That's what I like so much about him. And he's so damn cute. But I can't, I just can't!" She said fighting with herself out loud.
"I think you can."
Kaylie heard the little voice and looked down. There stood a little girl. She looked much like Kaylie had when she was little, there was definitely a striking resemblance there. She was on the shorter side, no more than six probably, with long blonde hair combed neatly down her back. Her light pink shirt had flowers growing up from the bottom of it and Kaylie couldn't believe that at one time she had probably been able to fit into the same tiny shorts that the child wore. She struggled a smile as the little girl came closer.
"You think I can?" She asked quietly.
"Yup. You're pretty. And I think you really like him. Is he cute?" She asked with a big toothy grin.
"Ya, very much so. But..." She trailed off as she leaned against the sinks, a frown of thought forming on her forehead.
"But what?" The little girl inquired.
"I'm scared." Kaylie sighed. She couldn't believe she was having a conversation with a six year old about things she couldn't even talk to Brian about. She figured he already knew anyway though.
"What's your name? I'm Lynsey." The little girl asked as she pulled herself up to sitting on the sinks.
"Hi Lynsey, nice to meet you. I'm Kaylie." She said smiling.
"Kaylie, well, I don't know much about this..." Lynsey started off. "But I think that if you're in here crying over him there's probably something to be crying over." She stated. Kaylie wrinkled her eyebrows up in confusion.
"What do you mean?" She asked turning more towards the little girl.
"Well, l mean. Well see, my mommy always says that you never do anything for no reason. You're in here crying because you know you want to go see this boy again but your scared and that's holding you back. See what I mean? You're crying because you're scared that he won't want you or something like that. Does that make any sense?" She explained. Kaylie stood there wide eyed.
"Lynsey, how old are you?" Kaylie pondered.
"Guess!" She smiled widely.
"Six?" Kaylie attempted.
"Yup! How'd you know?" Lynsey laughed. "I'm here for my birthday with my mommy. I just turned six today!"
"Well happy birthday! I have a question for you though." Kaylie started. "Just how did you know all of that? You're only six." She asked. Lynsey looked back at her a bit disgusted.
"Kaylie! I am six! And I got moved to the second grade! My teacher says I'm really smart!" She said proudly as a woman walked up behind her and looked at them worriedly.
"Lynsey, who are you talking to?" She asked slowly.
"Oh! Hi mommy! This is Kaylie. I'm helping her out with some boy problems!" Lynsey said matter-of-factly.
"Is that so!" Her mother laughed as Kaylie blushed a little.
"Yes it is! You've got a very smart daughter here!" She said ruffling Lynsey's hair a bit.
"See! I told you I was smart!" Lynsey exclaimed.
"Yes, she is very smart, even if a bit out spoken at times. Nice to meet you Kaylie." Her mother chuckled again and reached out her hand which Kaylie shook.
"I was wondering Mrs..." Kaylie started.
"Mrs. Robinson." She filled in smiling.
"Well, I was wondering if you and Lynsey and your husband would like to join me for lunch? We're going to be eating with Mickey and Lynsey was so nice helping me..." She trailed off.
"Ya ma! And it's my birthday too!" Lynsey said excitedly.
"I don't see why not! Just how did you get that arranged though? I tried and reservations were booked up months in advance!" Mrs. Robinson asked flabbergasted (love that word too!).
"Well, Lynsey, do you know who the Backstreet Boys are?" Kaylie said smiling as the six year olds eyes grew wide.
"Yes, yes, yes!!!! I love Nick!! He's so hot!!!" She squealed.
"Well then!" Kaylie laughed. "That's who I'm eating lunch with. Brian's a good friend of mine and the group and I came here today."
"I'm going to get to eat with Nick Carter mommy!! Did you hear what Kaylie said??? We're going to eat with Nick Carter!!" Lynsey yelled.
"Honey, calm down. I'm sure Kaylie here doesn't want everyone in the park knowing that her friends are here." Her mom said gently. Lynsey blushed a bit.
"Oh, sorry." She giggled then grabbed Kaylie's hand.
"Well come on! Let's go!" She said pulling at her mom and Kaylie's hands. The three walked out of the rest room and headed towards where the guys were eating.
"So Lynsey, how do you feel about doing a little favor for me?" Kaylie started as they neared their destination.
"Thanks again for everything. It was really sweet..." AJ trailed off.
"So, just how do you know Kevin?" Howie inquired as the three of them made their way to the castle. They were already late for lunch and knew Kevin would be peeved but after the commotion he and AJ'd caused earlier no one wanted to go faster at the expense of making a scene.
"Funny little story there. I'm sure you'll find it quite amusing!" Katie laughed but said no more.
"Well, go on!" Howie insisted.
"Um, not right now. You'll find out later. Really. It's no big deal." She said as they wandered over to where Kevin and Brian were sitting on the bench in front of the castle. Katie motioned to the other two to go behind them and cover their eyes as she slowly walked in front of where they sat.
"Agh! What's going on here?!" Brian yelped as someone covered his eyes. The same response was heard from Kevin just a few feet away.
"Ya, J, D, this really isn't funny." Kevin said dryly as he sat there with his arms crossed. "You guys are late you do realize that right?" He said his eyes still covered.
"Geez Kev, give em a little slack there! The boys had a bit of a mishap." Katie laughed. Kevin and Brian threw off the hands that covered their eyes and jumped up.
"Hey, you're here. I was beginning to think you'd stood me up." Kevin laughed as Brian grabbed Katie in a big hug.
"Down boy! I missed you too, but there's no need to suffocate me!" Katie blushed as Brian let her out of the hug but continued to have an arm around her waist.
"So! What are you doing here? The last time I saw you, you were, like, I dunno, what are you doing here?!" Brian rambled on unable to make a clear sentence.
"I um, I still work here." Katie laughed.
"Hey, wait, how'd you get the guys? And what happened with them? What's up with the Disney garb?!" Kevin questioned.
"Oh! Nothing! Not important!" Howie and AJ spoke up. AJ shot Katie a pleading look at her and she only grinned. "They just wanted to get in the spirit I guess. Practically plowed me down trying to get me to get them in costume!" She laughed.
"Nice." Kevin stated looking at Howie and AJ as if they were crazy.
"So, we better get going. We're already late for lunch and then we've got to do some publicity." Brian said as they walked off. Half way there Nick started snickering. AJ whipped around and glared at him.
"Listen, I understand the outfits not the best but I had to ok?!" He demanded blushing.
"Ya, I get that and all, but I was just wondering, where are your guys' clothes?" Nick laughed. Howie stopped dead in his tracks as AJ looked at Katie.
"You brought them right?! I mean, we're going to be able to change into them when we get to the restaurant right??" AJ said as he started to panic.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I forgot. I mean, I have MY stuff, I thought you would have grabbed yours. Sorry." She said grinning cheekily. AJ stood there shocked as Howie started to laugh.
"I see nothing funny about this!" He said exasperated.
"I do! Anyway, we can always grab some clothes on the way to the radio station." Howie said making a plan.
"I guess." AJ grumbled as they entered the restaurant. They were quickly seated, Nick on one side of Mickey, Brian on the other.
"Rok! Look! It's Mickey!" Nick shouted across the table. Brian grinned and nodded his head as Mickey chuckled himself. Kevin turned to Katie and whispered into her ear.
"You'd think that after meeting so many famous people through this job he wouldn't be so excited about seeing a giant rat." He laughed. Katie swatted him in return.
"Hey buddy, I love the rat. He pays my pay check!" She smiled as she looked over at Brian. He had his head in his hands and was unusually quiet.
"What's up with him? He was never usually like this..." She trailed off.
"Love troubles." Kevin whispered as AJ sat down dejectedly next to Katie. He stuck his hand out in front of her and waited for her to take it.
"Hi, I don't think we ever OFFICIALLY met. I mean, I don't really remember you much from way back when. I'm AJ, you would be?" He said grasping her hand.
"Katie. I would be Katie." She said. She gasped a bit as AJ took her hand and kissed it gently.
"Well, Miss Katie, I think we're even. Wouldn't you say so?" He asked, his voice husky. Katie seemed to ponder the thought for a few moments, her nose scrunching up in thought. AJ couldn't help but to think it was adorable.
"We're even, for now..." She said mischievously.
"The lady has spoken!" AJ smiled.
Brian gently smiled to himself as Nick threw himself into yet another deep discussion with Mickey Mouse about how it is to live in Disney World his whole life. He found it quite amazing that he could carry on a conversation with a fictional character, especially one who wasn't allowed to talk. His thoughts then returned to those of Kaylie.
Where is she? What did I do? I never should have let Kevin get that far. She's been through so much already today, she didn't need that. I hope she's ok. He thought as he distractedly looked at his menu. I still can't believe she said that she wanted me though. Like a dream come true. Kind of ironic that we're here at Disney when she told me. Isn't their slogan where dreams are made or something like that... He went off in his thoughts. She's probably so confused right now. I miss her. Where IS she?! He thought again for the millionth time since she'd first ran away. He groaned and again dropped his head into his hands. He stayed that way for a while, only raising his head to give his order to the waitress.
Softly he felt a tap on his shoulder. He ignored the first few taps but then realized that if it was any of the guys they would have already found another way to get his attention by now. Looking up he saw a little girl standing by his chair. Her hands were clasped in front of her and she had a determined look on her face.
"Yes?" Brian asked figuring it was a fan wanting an autograph.
"Mr. Littrell?" She said as more of a statement than a question.
"You can call me Brian. Yes, can I help you?" He asked quietly. The others seemed oblivious to what was going on and kept at their conversations.
"Ok, Brian, can you come with me for a second?" She asked. He looked around to see if she had any parents with her but saw no one. Standing up he followed her to the lobby. Brian guessed she was only about six. Once in the lobby she climbed upon the waiting benches so she could be nearer to his height. Sticking out her hand she smiled for the first time.
"Hi! I'm Lynsey." She said.
"Why hello Lynsey. What is it that I can do for you today?" Brian grinned at the little girl's spunk. For some reason she reminded him of someone, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
"She's scared." Lynsey stated and said no more.
"Who's scared?" Brian asked not comprehending.
"Kaylie. She's scared. She just wants you to know that. She doesn't want to get hurt again." She said softly letting all her words sink in for Brian.
"Kaylie, where is she? I'm so worried about her!" Brian said exasperated. Lynsey just started to tap her foot.
"Didn't you hear what I just said?" She asked.
"Ya, you said Kaylie's scared." Brian said softly sitting down next to the little girl. She plopped down next to him and they just sat there for a while.
"You know Brian. I think she really likes you. And you know what!" She said grinning again.
"What?" Brian said taking her bait.
"I think you really like her too! You've just, I dunno, you've just got to wait for her, give her a little space." Lynsey said carefully.
"Did Kaylie tell you to tell me that?" Brian said worriedly.
"The first part. Why?" She asked looking up at him. Suddenly it dawned on Brian. She reminded him of a young Kaylie. He smiled at memories that flew through past his eyes.
"Because I think you're one very smart girl!" Brian laughed picking up Lynsey.
"Thank ya sir!" She giggled as he twirled her around in a circle.
"Now Lynsey, can I ask you a question?" Brian asked.
"I don't know, can you?!" Lynsey shot back laughing at her own joke.
"Ok then! Miss Lynsey, MAY I ask you a question?" He laughed along with her.
"Yes you MAY Brian." She smiled.
"Would you like to eat lunch with the group?" He asked, his eyes sparkling.
"Yes, yes, yes, please!!" She shouted.
"I take that as a yes. Will your mom or dad be joining us too?" Brian said as he took her small hand in his and led them back to their table.
"My mommy's already at the table. Kaylie's there too." She said happily as she skipped along.
"She is, is she." Brian laughed.
"Yup! But Brian," she said stopping them and making sure she had his full attention, "let her come to you okey dokey?" She said seriously.
"Yes ma'am! Wouldn't think of otherwise!" He joked. Lynsey looked back up at him as they made their way over to their chairs.
"You're goofy you know that!" She laughed.
"Well, I HAVE been told once or twice before." Brian said as he pulled out a chair next to the woman he assumed was her mother. He stole a glance at Kaylie and quickly looked away as he noticed that she too was looking at him.
He went and sat down quietly and noticed that his food was there. He picked at it and then it came to him. A wonderful idea. Perking up he looked over to make sure that Kaylie wasn't looking and then leaned over to Kevin on his other side and explained it to him quietly. If this didn't work he didn't know what would.
Kaylie peered over at Brian and Kevin who were in deep discussion. Every now and then one of them would glance up at her but then look down again and continue to talk. She felt a tug on her shirt and looked over to Lynsey.
"I think they're talking about you." She said cupping her hand over Kaylie's ear to whisper. Kaylie in return did the same thing and told her she felt the same way.
"You think it's anything bad?" She asked worriedly.
"Naw, Kaylie, come on already!" She giggled.
"What? What?" Kaylie exclaimed softly.
"Kaylie! He likes you! Get over it!" She laughed.
"Well all right then!" Kaylie grinned. If only Brian could reassure her that he wouldn't break her heart. She knew that Brian would never intentionally do such a thing but she couldn't deal with any more. As they all stood up to leave Kaylie looked over to Brian to find that once again they were looking at each other. Their eyes connected for a split second and she tried to read what was going through his mind, what he was going to do. At the same time he tried to tell her not to worry any longer, but then the moment passed and she walked out the door. Katie noticed this interaction and latched onto AJ's arm to get him to stop for a second.
"What's up with those two?" She whispered. AJ looked over at them and smiled slightly. Taking Katie's hand in his he opened the door for her.
"Those two. They're meant for one another, they just don't see it." He said quietly as they continued to walk. AJ noticed that she hadn't dropped his hand and did a silent cheer for himself.
"Looks like they see it to me." Katie said, her eyes twinkling. AJ looked down at her and smiled almost as if it was painful.
"They see it, but as of now there's been nothing they can do about it. They're both in pain, it's a bit sad." He said dejectedly. "But, on a brighter note, are you going to the station with us??" He said excitedly. Katie looked up at him and completely forgot that she was supposed to go back to work after lunch.
"Sure, I'd be happy to." She smiled.
"Well, in that case, you can come with me." AJ returned the smile but then quickly it disappeared.
"What's the matter?" Katie asked expectantly. "Her, Mandy. She shows up now?! Why me? Why us?" AJ grumbled. Katie dropped his hand as if it was on fire.
"What? Your girlfriend?! I knew I shouldn't have given you a second chance! Apparently my first impression of you was the correct one! And you can FORGET about me coming to the station with you!" She spat out. AJ sputtered in response but Katie was already gone over to where Kevin was standing.
"NICK!!" He yelled at the top of his lungs angrily as he reached for a cigarette. Nick looked over to where AJ was standing and let his gaze travel further beyond AJ's angry glare.
Great. Wonderful. Teriffic. Nick thought as he saw Mandy approach him. Bad. Horrible. Terrible. He groaned as he noticed the look on her face. It looked much like the one AJ was wearing, except this one was heading his way. Nick looked up at the sky and sighed.
"What did I DO already?!"
