The Working Test

On Sunday, May 14th 1994, Locheil Look North passed the Show Border Collie Working Test, at the first attempt.  Nap is sired by Sh. Ch. Viber Travelling Matt from Corinlea, JW and is out of Lethans Jace at Locheil. This achievement has made me extremely proud having bred, trained and handled Nap myself.

Nap was not introduced to sheep until he was two years old, he took to working like a duck to water, naturally fetching the sheep to me with lots of confidence and style.  His obvious ability made me very keen to train him properly.  As I have no sheep of my own, thanks have to go to the people who allowed me to persuade them into letting me use their sheep.  Once they realized Nap was under good control there was no problem.

Nap and I have run in a few sheep dog trials here in the Highlands, but there are no nursery or novice trials near by, so we were always in with the "Big Boys" at Open Level.  Quite a few sheep dog men have admired Nap at  work and have asked his breeding, when I tell them his sire is one of the top show dogs in the country, they think we show folk cannot be going too far wrong.

Nap has a steadying influence on flighty sheep, but is also very strong on stubborn obstinate sheep.  I feel confidence that he would never be stuck moving heavy, wilful sheep, they would have to move one way or another.  I am quite sure that Nap in more experienced hands would have made a first rate trial dog.

When the letter from the Kennel Club arrived, Nap had not even seen sheep for months.  I felt sick at the thought of the test, but decided to enter and do our best to pass.  We practiced regularly and everything was going to plan.  I contacted Barbara Sykes and arranged a training session on the way home from the East Anglian Border Collie Club Championship Show.  Barbara was super and gave me lots of helpful advice.

I arranged another session with Barbara the day before the test and everything went fine, and with her last minute tips I felt much better. Barbara Sykes is a super person and an excellent teach, I would recommend her to anybody wishing to do sheep work.

Nap was a good natured, honest, clever, and easy to live with as well as being strong willed at times.  Together we had achieved my ambition.  Nap was retired from the show ring spending his days doing whatever he pleased.  Well done Nap!  You  made breed history and I am so proud of you! You will always be remembered for the Champion you were. Sleep easy Nap.
