Federation Starship Types
Here are a few types of Federation ships. There are many, many more types, but these should give you a general idea.
Galaxy Class

The Galaxy class Starship is the backbone of the Federation fleet.These ships carry families who want to live in outer space.
The ships are science vessels, warship, transport all in one. They are armed with phaser banks and photon torpedoes. They also have
3 shuttlebays. They have Warp and Impulse engines. Noted vessels of this class: USS Galaxy, USS Enterprise-D, USS Yamato.
Defiant Class

The Defiant class is the only true warship class in the entire Starfleet. It is a lot smaller than other starfleet ships,only 5 decks high.
It is armed with pulse phasers and Quantum torpedoes. It has Impulse and Warp engines. The USS Defiant is the only one with a cloaking device.
Noted ships in this class: USS Defiant, USS Valiant, USS Sao Paula.

Photon Torpedoes
Starship Enterprise fires a volley of Photon Torpedoes
Photon torpedoes use Anti-matter and Matter to generate an explosion. Torpedo fire power has been difficult to estimate, but most guesses are between 1 and 100 Megatons. They can be fired at warp, and they use a Warp sustainer engine to remain at warp. It is not a true warp engine however. They have been standard Federation Weaponry since 2153. Of course, as with all weapons, they got more powerfull, faster and more accurate as time passed.
