Ryouko is the "daughter" of the genius scientist Washu, another member of the Tenchi household. Actually, she was created through the union of one of Washu's ova with the "Mass", a sentient lifeform discovered by Washu.
It is stated that Ryouko is about 2000 years old, but sources differ on this. The fact is that Ryouko has been around for quite a while, though for most of her existence she was not in control of her own life. After Washu created Ryouko and Ryo-ohki, her student Kagato seized Ryouko and Ryo-ohki, and after imprisoning Washu on board the spaceship Souja (which Washu also created), Kagato used Ryouko as a tool to steal artifacts from various planets in his quest for the ultimate power. It was during this period of time that Ryouko earned her reputation as a space pirate, and it was during this time that she attacked the planet of Jurai in order to capture both the Tenchiken, the sword currently in the possession of Tenchi, and Tsunami, the most powerful of the Trees of Jurai. However, during this raid Ryouko was not able to capture either of these items, and she fled the planet with the First Crown Prince of Jurai, Yousho, in pursuit of her. The chase led both of them to Earth, and after crashing on Earth, she was defeated by Yousho and imprisoned in a cave.
During Ryouko's 700 years of confinement, she could still have contact with the outside world by traveling outside the confines of the cave in her astral body. During this time, being away from Kagato's influence, she began to change...to develop her own personality and feelings. One day, while looking about the world in her astral body, she spotted a young boy with a beautiful woman. What surprised her was that this boy could see her when no one else could. Ryouko continued to watch the boy through the years since he made frequent visits to the cave. Ryouko longed to be able to be free of the cave and play with the boy. Then, when the boy, whose name was Tenchi and who ironically was a descendant of Yousho, was 17, he entered the cave and accidently broke the seal which had held Ryouko captive. Ryouko was thus able to explore the world in her physical body, and one of the first things she does is visit Tenchi after school in order to "play" with him. Unfortunately, her idea of playing is firing beams of energy at Tenchi and scaring the living daylights out of him. Thus Ryouko starts off her friendship with Tenchi on a wrong note.
Ryouko is arguably the most powerful of the girls who reside at the Masaki residence, though there is speculation that Washu is
more powerful since Washu created Ryouko...that and the fact that Washu was one of the three goddesses in Tenchi Muyo. Ryouko's
power lies in three gems. These gems grant her certain powers depending on where they are located on her body, specifically on
either wrist or chest. When she possesses all three gems, it is rumored she can create the Light Hawk Wings, Jurai's most powerful
weapon. Currently the only person who possesses that power is Tenchi. Two of the three gems are currently embedded in the tenchiken,
Tenchi's sword which is also the Master Key of Jurai. Even without all the gems Ryouko possesses the power to fly, teleport to places
she's already been to, pass through solid objects, and control energy to use in blasts or as an energy sword. With gems in both
her wrists, she can summon and control spirits (in fact, her name means "spirit caller"). Ryouko also commands the spaceship Ryo-ohki
which, after being destroyed in the first fight with Aeka, reproduced itself in the form of a cabbit (a cross between a cat and a rabbit).
Ryouko's major faults are that she is very impulsive and tends to act on her gut feelings. This is mainly attributed to her many years under Kagato's control...she simply has no experience with dealing with people. She especially does not know how to deal with her feelings for Tenchi. Ryouko gets along all right with everyone except Aeka who she tolerates. She is lazy and will do whatever it takes to avoid doing chores around the house, much to Aeka's displeasure. She also has trouble cooking, mostly due to the fact that she does not know what good food is supposed to taste like. However, when it comes to Tenchi, she will literally do whatever it takes to win his affection.
