20th Century Coinage of the

Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia

Prince Philippe authorized the production of coins-of-tradition by Serge Huard of Montreal, Canada. Coins were produced for 1988 through 1992. The obverse bears the portait of Prince Philippe d'Araucanie and the reverse changed with each year's issue. In excess of 2,000 coins were struck each year, mostly in cupro-nickel, but in a variety of other metals and finishes as well. Illustrated here is the 1990 issue which bears on its reverse the image of the Entrecasteaux, the French man o' war that carried Orelie-Antoine de Tounens to the shores of his Kingdom in 1869. Eight set of seven patterns coins was created for the years 1993 through 1997. These coins, however, never were never put into normal production.
