is administered though the Asian Studies Center
URL:
http://www.isp.msu.edu/AsianStudies/studyAbroad.htm on behalf of a consortium of 15 Michigan public universities including MSU.
Founded in 1988, the JCMU grew out of the sister state relationship between Michigan and the Shiga Prefecture. To date, 249 students from the consortium universities and 19 other universities have participated in Japanese language and studies courses and 120 students from nearly 50 U.S. institutions have taken part in intensive Japanese language summer programs. The center also serves Japanese students wishing to learn English (more than 100 are currently enrolled part or full time) and offers workshops, seminars, and short-term Japanese language programs.
In addition, it has a Visiting Scholars Program through which faculty and graduate students teach and do research. Although JCMU is primarily designed or regularly enrolled students, it performs an important outreach role through community structures and programs that build strong relationships between Japanese and Americans.

Japanese Language Summer Programs inside and outside of the United States:
MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE Summer Japanese Language Program. The
nine week program is the most intensive, learning-packed of all currently available.
(information updated on July 26, 2002)
Each summer since 1915, Middlebury College has devoted
its Vermont campus and considerable resources to the intensive study of foreign languages. A major tenet of the Language Schools is the premise that linguistic
competence is essential to true cultural understanding and that effective language teaching provides meaningful insight into foreign cultures.
There are eight Language Schools: Arabic, Chinese, French, German,
Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Courses
range from beginning to advanced in all eight schools;
graduate courses are offered in five of the school.
