Two months had passed since the rafting accident. School was just around the corner. Trunks
called Averi to see if she wanted to go see a movie.
“Sure. I’ll go. What about Goten?”
“He said he was busy with something, but he didn’t say what. Probably had to go shopping for
school.” Trunks said. “I’ll come down to your house around 6:00 and then we’ll walk from there.
I don’t think you live too far from the theater.”
“Okay. See you then. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Averi slowly hung up her phone and looked around her room.
A few minutes later there was a knock at the front door. Averi answered it. “You ready to
go?” Trunks couldn’t say anything. All he could think was “Wow”. Averi had on a green tank top
that perfectly matched her eyes, khaki shorts that displayed her long legs, and hiking boots.
“Hello...Earth to Trunks.” “Wh...what? Oh, sorry.” he said sheepishly. “Let’s go.”
The movie was great. They were sad that Goten had to miss it. After it was over, the two
went to go get some ice cream “The funniest part was when that monster sneezed on that man.”
Averi laughed. “Nuh uh. The funniest part was when the other monster mooned everyone at that
dance. Now that was funny!” Trunks retorted. He burst out laughing at the thought of someone
getting mooned, smacked his face with his ice cream cone. “What was that for?!” Averi snorted,
and she too burst out in hysterics.
As they walked back to Averi’s home, they discussed other things, like how the math
teacher, who’s a woman, had a toupee and how you could almost hear the mashed potatoes that
they served in the lunch room talking. When Trunks and Averi finally reached her front door step,
it was about 8:30.
“I’ll see ya tomorrow.” said Trunks and he turned to leave.
“No you won’t.” Averi replied quietly.
“What do ya mean?”
“We’re moving. We’ll be gone tomorrow morning.”
Those two words did it all. “You’re moving?! That can’t be! Why didn’t you tell us?!” Trunks
yelled.
“I just thought that good-byes would be too hard on everyone.”
Averi looked at the ground. She felt like such a wimp. She couldn’t even tell her two closest
friends that she was going away. She finally mustered the courage to look up. Averi saw the hurt
in Trunks eyes that he was trying so hard to hide. Then she lost all self control.
“I...I’m...gonna...miss...you guys...so much.” she sobbed as she threw her arms around Trunks
neck. He returned her embrace. Averi’s tears fell from her face and hit Trunks’ neck. He could
feel them trickling down his back into his shirt. He felt his own tears building up. “I will not cry. I
will...not...”, he thought, but he couldn’t stop it. A few single tears rolled down his cheek, and
landed on his friend's shoulder.
Averi’s sobs soon turned to sniffles and she looked up at Trunks face. “Don’t cry, please.”
he managed to croak. He lifted a hand to wipe away some of her tears, as if that would stop his
own from flowing. Then it happened, Out of the whirlwind of emotions, it happened. The kiss.
They didn’t know who started it, and they didn’t care. The kiss was comforting to both of them.
Thoughts were racing through their minds. “Woah. This isn’t as bad as it looks.” Trunks thought.
To tell the truth, he was scared of being kissed. He thought it always looked like one person was
going to eat the others head. They pulled away and just stood there. Averi broke the silence. “Tell
Goten that I’ll miss him. He’s like a brother to me. Give him a hug too. You don’t have to kiss him
though. I wouldn’t expect that.” She laughed. They hugged one last time. “I’ll never forget you,
nor what you did to save my life.” she whispered in his ear. They let go and Trunks turned to
leave. “Give me and Goten a call once you’ve moved.” He walked down the steps, paused, then
turned back around. He leaned up and gave Averi one last kiss. Both kisses were not from lovers,
but from true friends. “Bye Averi.” he said and he walked towards the street. He turned to get
one last look at the girl he’d only known for less than a year, eventhough it seemed like a life
time. Trunks gave her a smile and walked off. He would never forget the first time they met, the
first time he heard her laugh, the first time he saw her smile, or the first kiss. Averi wouldn’t ever
forget these things either. Trunks was part of her now. She smiled to herself as she thought about
all the good times they’d shared. Averi gazed out into the darkness and watched Trunks, her first
true friend, walk off into the night.
