They were at the hospital. Everyone. Trunks, Goten, Vegita, Bulma, Bra, Chi Chi, Goku,
and Gohan. All of them were sitting in the waiting room of the Critical Care unit; all of them
except Averi’s parents. Sure, they’d been notified of the accident, but they were still at their jobs,
which were on the other side of town. It would take them a while to get to the hospital.
The tension was so thick, you could have cut it with a knife. Then the doctor came in.
“Are any of you the parents of Averi Soma?” he asked. “They’re not here.” answered Gohan.
“We’re friends of Averi’s if that helps any.” “Well, I guess we’ll have to make do what we have. I
am Dr. Hall and I’m in charge of Averi’s care.” “Is she all right?” asked Goten. “That’s what I
came to talk to you about.” he said. “She suffered from some pretty bad injuries, especially to her
head.” Dr. Hall held up an x-ray to the light to show everyone. “Thankfully, as you can see, there
is no damage to the brain. That helmet she had probably saved her life. However, Averi’s lost a
vast amount of blood. If she doesn’t get an immediate transfusion, she could die within a few
days.” The color in everybody’s face drained. “She needs fresh blood, newly donated. I don’t
think her body could handle the frozen blood we have in the cooler room.” The doctor walked
over behind a nurse who was busy typing on a computer. “Since her parents are obviously not
here and no one else knows her, we’ll have to select from one of you.” Dr. Hall studied the screen
very carefully. “Hmmm...well. It seems that the one of you who has a blood match closest to Miss
Soma is...you sir.” ,and he pointed to Vegita. Vegita struggled to stand up. He felt dizzy and light
headed. “Doctor! He can’t go!” said Vegita’s wife, Bulma. “He’s been feeling sick lately, and
might be unsafe to give some of his blood to Averi.” “What are you talking about. I feel fine!
Never felt so good!” Vegita retorted. He tried to stand up straight, but began to fall. Bulma
caught him before he hit his chair. Trunks looked up at his father’s pale face, grim with
determination to try to stand up on his own and to regain any pride he might have lost. “I’ll go.”
Trunks said quietly. “He’s my dad, so we must have close to the same blood type. I’m not sick, so
I’ll go for him.” The doctor checked the computer once more. “Okay. Looks like you saved the
day, young man. If you’ll follow me.” Trunks rose from his seat and turned to look back at his
best friend. Goten mouthed the words, “Good luck.” , and gave Trunks a solemn thumbs up.
Trunks nodded and followed Dr. Hall out of the room.
Two days later...
“Thanks for the flowers Mrs. Chi Chi. I’ll, uh, put them with the other ones.” Averi smiled. She had survived, all because of Trunks’ donation of blood. “Hope you fell better soon, kid.” said Gohan. “Now that you have some Saiyan blood in your veins, you should heal right up in no time at all!” laughed Goku. “See you later.” , and they left the room. Then Goten and Trunks entered. “Hey! What’s up?” they said. “How ya feeling?” “Well, besides the fact that I almost died, I feel fine.” Averi laughed. The guys sat at the foot of her hospital bed and they talked of how it hasn’t been the same without her around. “So, how’s it fell to be part Saiyan now?” Trunks asked. “I feel the same as always. A little stronger, but not much.” Goten looked at his watch; their time was almost up. They only had fifteen minutes at a time. “Well, we’d better go. Your parents are here and they want to see you.” “Suprise, suprise. I guess they do care about me after all.” she said sarcastically. “If it bothers you so bad, then why don’t you tell them when they come in?” Goten asked. “Yeah. If you don’t do this now, you’ll be missing more time without your folks.” Trunks said. ‘Okay. I’ll see them.” Averi said quietly. Trunks and Goten left the room. “We’re through, Mr. and Mrs. Soma.” Averi’s parents entered and emerged a while later, teary eyed and red faced. “She wants to see you boys again.” said Mrs. Soma. The guys reentered Averi’s room. “I told them.” she said softly. “They said that as soon as I got out of the hospital that we’d do something together, as a family.” Averi yawned. Trunks and Goten could tell she was tired. “We’ll go so you can get some rest. See ya later Averi.” Trunks patted her hand and Goten gave her a big, dopey smile. She grinned and said, “You guys are too good for me.” She was about to take a nap, when she added, “Thanks for saving my life.” “You would have done the same for us.” Goten replied. “Yep, I would.” Then she closed her eyes and soon fell into a deep sleep.
