In Attempting
to clarify the regional economic development strategi of the distric of
Sangihe Talaud, the goverment, under Mr. Lieutenant Colonel Harry Soetojo
as the regent of the district, proposed to establish an institution of
higher education in fisheries sciencie and technology. In 1965, a proposal
regarding the establishment of the Faculty of Fisheries was submitted to
the Minister of Education, Mr. Syarif Thayeb. The minister, then approved
by letter (no. 58, 23 March 1966) the establishment of Faculty of Fisheries,
Sam Ratulangi University, in Tahuna, Sangihe Talaud to start retroactively
on August 17, 1965. Later the Rector of Sam Ratulangi University, Mr. F.H.
Palilingan, issued a decision ( no. 1397/E13/I/67 ) on May 15, 1967, welcoming
the first new students who had entered on January 1st, 1967. On July 1st,
1970, the location of the Faculty of Fisheries was moved to Manado and
has existed there until now. On December 5th 1996 by letter of Minister
of Education and Culture No. 0341/0/1996, the name of Faculty was renamend
to Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences.
