In 1627 a new group of colonists was sent to Wapioco by the Dutch West Indies Company. The leader Jan van Ryen and the 35 other colonists travelled to the colony on a squadron of three ships under the command by Hendrik Jacobszoon Lucifer that left on 22 January 1627.
On 3 March 1627 the squadron arrived at the river Amazon. Due to bad weather they arrived at the colony Wiapoco only on 7 March. They found that the colony had been abandoned by the previous colonists. To find out what had happened two of the ships were sent to find the Indians who could tell them what had happened. They returned the next day with two indians who guided them to the nearest indian village. The Indians of the village fled when they saw that the ships began to unload the cargo of the New colonists. From other indians in the area the eventually heard why they had fled: some time ago a group of colonists had landed at the village and had been killed by these indians. Only three colonists were taken prisoner. Three indians were immediately taken hostage and a fourth was sent out to retrieve what appeared to be the missing Dutch colonists. These three were brought aboard the next day. They told them what had happened to the colony.
The colony was abandoned due to several attacks by the Spaniards and the Portuguese. The colonists lost 8 men and had travelled, using a barque, to an English colony to be safe. This colony was also repeatedly under attack by the Spaniards and the Portuguese, however. The entire colony, including the English colonists, decided to leave using two longboats. The leader of the Dutch colonists was then murdered by a fellow Dutchman, called Sargeant Matruyt. After this the group split up into 4 seperate groups. The Indians of the Amazon area came to them and under the guise of friendship offered a strong alcoholic drink to the Colonists. After having got the colonists drunk, however, they murdered all of them except three who were held captive.
No repercussions for this were taken, however, because Jan van Ryen and the 35 other colonists intended to establish a new colony. Peace was made with the Indians in the area and a small fort was built before the ships left for Barbados.
The colony did not last long after they left. It was repeatedly attacked by the indians of that area. They were called the Galibi's. Most of the colonists were killed and their crops were destroyed. Some of the colonists managed to escape in self-made sloops. After a long voyage they arrived at the Isles of the West Indies. Two colonists arrived at St. Vincent and two others at the Island of Tobago. These last two were discovered by the Dutch ship the Fortuin in the year 1628. Their discovery led to the establishment of a Dutch colony on Tobago. This ship the Fortuin was commanded by Geleyn van Stapels. The ship was part of a fleet under the command of the Admiral Pieter Adriaanszoon Ita.
