with healths to her Maiefty, and to fome
other Peeres of the Realme, they two with
fome others of the prime about them, retired
themfelves into a private Cabin, to confult
what in that cafe was beft to bee done : fome
thought it was the beft and fureft courfe, to
take the advantage of their free and generall
pardon, others againe held that it was no
other than a ftate policy to forfeit their Ships
and goods, becaufe uniuftly extorted from
others, and withall to infinuate their lives :
thefe things were
Pro et con long debated,
but the latter prevailed, with a confidera-
tion that they were then free Commanders at
fea, and to fubmit themfelves upon fuch faire
and fugred promifes were but a certaine en-
trance into their future and utter ruine : upon
which having concluded they cald to the Cap-
taine, and returned unto him this anfwer.
True it was, that they were much bound
to her facred Maiefty for fo great a grace and
mercy, as to pardon offenders in that high de-
gree ; fuch as they acknowledge themfelves,
and that they made no doubt, but that her high-
neffe in her owne Royall difpofition, meant no
otherwife than was there in her moft gracious
