Pier Lüng (fifteenth Century)
Pier Lüng is the first recorded Dutch sea rover. Not much is known about him
other then that he was a North-Fries. How and when he roamed the seas is only
recorded in folklore. According to this he attacked ships of Holland as well as
Danisch and German ships. Small villages along the coast were also subject to his
attacks by sea. Pier sometimes pretended to have Letters of Commission which
would indicate that his actions were legitimate, but there was never any
proof to their existence.
