Cornelis Tromp (1629-1691)
The second son of Maarten Tromp was born on September 9, 1629. He
served as a lieutenant on his father's ship at the age of 16 and became a
Captain in 1649. After a privateer commission against the North African
Pirates in 1650 he took part in the First English War (1652-1654). For his
part in the Battle of Leghorn in 1653 he was made a Rear Admiral. In 1654
he was off again on a privateering commission against the Algerian corsairs.
After this he was involved in the First Northern War (1655-1660) between
Sweden and Poland and later in the Second English War in (1666-1674?). In
1676 he was the commander of a combined Danish-Dutch fleet. He stayed in
Danish service until 1678. In 1691 he received command of the fleet as Lieutenant
Admiral Genenral of the Dutch Republic. Because he was ill he did not
sail, however, and he died on May 29, 1691.
