Welcome to the Fortress of Bone.

Deep in the Shadowlands, near the Sepulcher of Bone, a hidden fortress, forgotten in ages long past, lie the remains of fallen warriors who await the command of their lord Tsukuro to rise up and march forth into the night to rend and destroy their most hated opponents, the samurai of Rokugan. Along with the aid of terrible oni and brutal ogres, the forces of Undeath sweep along the blasted plains of the Shadowlands searching for a weakness in the Kaiu walls. Beware, the riders of death are upon you...

Greetings, Samurai.  I see you have found the Fortress of Bone.  I am Kirijima, late of the Scorpion Clan.  I am called the Slayer in the Darkness by my more, um, open minded companions.  This place is the stronghold of the Shadowlands Undead.  Tsukuro is the Overlord of this palace and Noekam is the Cryptkeeper in charge of new recruits.  Our focus is on the Shadowlands Undead in L5R CCG and Clan War.

Undead Tactics in

The Personalities

Tsukuro

This is my army general.  The figure is really  cool so I wanted him to stand out from the rank and file skeletal troops he would be with. I primed him with flat black spray and base coated him with fortress gray. I then painted the bone features skull white folllowed by a little bleached bone.  the shirt has been painted blue grey and the trims, ties, sash and the grips of the katana and wakizashi in blood red.  The base was painted mud brown with green flock added.  the katana was left black and drybrushed with fortress grey to have that obsidian look.

Yogo Junzo

The big bad boy who started it all.  As an ex- Scorpion, I primed him with black and drybrushed him with fortress gray.  The base coat for his robe is blood red followed with drybrushed highlights of orange. His skin was drybrushed rotting flesh followed by a highlight of rotting flesh mixed with white. The scroll was left black and the smoke was brybrushed fortress grey and highlighted with jade green. His fingernails were painted black

Moto Tsume

The Moto Tsume figure was only available to retailers when the Clan War game first arrived. Only recently were they available in the Imperial Herald. The figure is pretty neat, but I thought that the face needed a little more detail, so I dremmeld of the old face, and inserted a newer one. I primed it black and drybrushed it grey. The bone feature were done the same way as Tsukuro's. The clothing were drybrushed blood red.  I used purple ink for the armor then drybrushed the highlights with purple mixed with white, in progressively lighter shades. The kabuto was painted in gold trim and the katana grip highlighted with 1/4 purple 3/4 white. The blade was drybrushed with tin bitz mined with bolt gun metal.

Oni no Tsuburu

The boxed set has two of these lovely lads and I think that this is the coolest of the two, by far. I put him together easily, since the figure consists of only 5 parts. I primed him black and drybrushed fortress grey. I then used purple ink all over the model's surface. After the ink had dried, I mixed 1/2 purple paint with 1/2 white which I used to highlight the important features of the model. This done I mixed a little more white to the mixture and painted the lips, the faces on his stomach and the nipples. His teeth, nails and protruding bone were painted white, the roots drybryshed with a little chestnut ink. His eyes were painted red as are his gums. Finally, the base was painted and flocked as above.

Kyoso no oni

A really cool figure. Comes two in the box and I just  had to take one and change it, to make it look more dynamic. I gently pried off the finger on her upper right hand  that was connecting to her horns and bent the hand foward.; I bent her lower right hand to look like she was pointing and bent the middle two fingers of her lower left hand to simulate that she was summoning her power to throw another deadly range attack. I used the priming and initial drybrushing techniques as above and drybrushed her blood red; I applied a red ink. then a black ink in the recesses. I mixed blood red with a little orange and dry brushed the prominent features. the explosing earth and her horns were painted brown and chesynut ink followed by a drybrushing of bleached bone. Base and flock as above.

Ogre Bushi

These bad boys hit hard and are fearsome close combat opponents.  They were painted using the same techniques as above, with the skin drybrushed brown and a light drybrushing of rotting flesh

The Troops

Skeleton Troops

This is the backbone of the undead army.  I wanted to give the impression of my army’s composition made up of different clans, after all,  death is an equal opportunity employer, all are worthy in the eyes of death.  So you can see Crab, Crane, Unicorn, Ronin, Scorpion and even Mantis Colors.  They were painted using the same techniques as above, only varying in the Clan specific colors.

Skeleton Archers

I used the same technique as above, varying in the clan colors.
