English Voices: Sailor Moon "S" Series
Meeting the English Voice Talents (1996) JUNE 14, 1996: UTARPA (University of Toronto Anime and Role-Playing Association) members got a surprise treat at this month's anime showing. The fifth item of the evenings show was the Sailormoon R movie (Japanese with English subtitles) and following the movie [after huge applause], the club president announced that, watching the movie with us were Roland Parliament (voice director and voice of Melvin) and Stephanie Morganstern, the voice of Mina/Sailor Venus! Mr. Parliament greeted us with a cheery "Hi-di-ho!" in his Melvin voice [response: great laughter and applause]. He thanked the group (about 100 people I'd guess) for their enthusiasm and support for the show. He was sad to report that at present there are no plans to make more English Sailor Moon episodes. He did state that he and the cast would be happy to record more episodes (the English re-recording is done in Toronto) if DiC and Bandai can resolve their business problems. [Please go to the Support Our Sailors Page to learn how you can show your support for continued Sailor Moon production] [Editor's Note the S.O.S. campaign has since ended] On the other hand he also said that an English version of the Sailor Moon R ("Romance") movie might be made. Again he thanked the fans for their support, and agreed to answer some questions from the audience. [DISCLAIMER: The following transcript is from my memory and as such may not be exactly correct. Please don't sue me!] Q: How did you get involved in voice acting? Roland Parliament (RP): By accident. [audience laughter] I started out writing advertising jingles. Q: What other Japanese animations has Optimum Productions worked on? "Hello Kitty" comes to mind. RP: Yeah, Karen Bernstein [?], the voice of Sailor Mercury, worked on "Hello Kitty" but this is the first Japanese animation I've done with Optimum. Q: What do you think of anime now that you've worked in this field? RP: Well, at first I didn't know what to think. I mean it's so different from say Disney animation, I mean the style...and everything. But, I dunno, it really grows on you. Q: Are you surprised by the age of the group here? [i.e. 15-25, mostly university students] RP: Yeah, I was looking for young girls. Oops, that doesn't sound right! [laughter] Q: Some of the names are kind of strange, where do get them from? RP: The script. [i.e. he doesn't write it, he just records it] Q: We want to hear something from Sailor Venus! [crowd cheers] [She is shy and reluctant, but the club organizers persuade her to stand up. She is a petite young woman with short blonde hair. The audience cheers wildly.] Stephanie Marganstern (SM): Uhh, hi, I ummm, didn't think I was going to have to say something. [Audience cheers like crazy anyway] SM: Wow. Well, umm...I guess this is all really amazing to me because, like when we're recording it, it's just a few people in the studio and you've got this weird script, like "Venus Star Make Up!" and stuff and you don't even know what the show is going to look like. I didn't know what Tuxedo Mask looked like until after the whole show was recorded! So, this is the first time I've actually seen people watching and reacting to the show...wow! Q: Say a Sailor Venus line! [Audience starts shouting various suggestions all at same time] SM: Umm, I'm too shy. Someone shouts: How about "Venus love-me chain encircle!" [One of Sailor Venus's attacks in Japanese. Audience laughs, hoots and whistles] SM: [Laughs] No way. Q: How about "Venus Star Power - Make Up!" SM: Well I could do that ... but the sheer power of the transformation might wipe out everyone in the room. [cheering] Q: Have you seen the original Japanese episodes? RP: Yeah, I watched all the ones that we remade into English, anyway. SM: Not really. I'd never seen the movie before. Q: What did they tell you about Zoicite? SM: We were just told she was very...friendly. Q: Did they tell you that she's a he? [I couldn't hear all the responses at this point because people around me were laughing about Zoicite.] Q: Can I have your autograph, signed to...? [audience erupted into requests for autographs, etc. Club organizer said that people could line up for autographs afterwards if our guests had time]. So, as my memory goes that was the gist of it. Listening to Stephanie Morganstern reminded me a lot of an interview I heard with Gillian Anderson ("Scully") of X-Files. Ms. Anderson said that although David Duchovny and Chris Carter were really into the whole concept of the show, she just thinks of herself as an actress doing her job. I think Ms. Morganstern had kind of the same idea about Sailor Moon, but after seeing an audience (who didn't know she was there) react to the show, and listening to us enthusiasts laugh, cry, cheer and all-in-all thoroughly enjoy ourselves, I think she came away with a new appreciation of how much people like this type of entertainment. As it says in the Japanese theme song, we want to "believe in a miracle romance"! Or, maybe she came away thinking we're all a bit nuts! Probably a bit of both, eh ;-) Once again, University of Toronto Anime and Role-Playing members had the chance to meet cast members from the English production of Sailor Moon. Appearing this month were:
Susan Roman.................Sailor Jupiter
Stephanie Morganstern.......Sailor Venus Toby Proctor................Darien/Tuxedo Mask Jill Frappier...............Luna Vince Corazza...............Alan Roland Parliament...........Melvin/ADR Director A brief Q&A session was held with this panel of actors. [Once again, I'm going mostly from memory, ok]. First of all, there are still no plans to resume English episode production. Many people wanted to know how the voice dubbing is done. Stephanie and Susan explained that each actress dubbed her parts alone by reading text that was scrolled across a monitor showing the scene being dubbed. [Hence Stephanie's comment that she didn't even know what Tuxedo Mask looked like until after the whole show had been made]. Jill Frappier commented that this was a lot harder than making an original animation in which the voices are recorded first and the animation is made to fit. In response to a question about the real voices of the actors not sounding like their screen voices, Roland Parliament said "What do you mean?" (in Melvin's voice). Toby ("Darien") said "Yeah, sure it's different. I mean, I don't go to the store and say [Tuxedo Mask's dramatic voice:] I WANT ... to buy some MILK!" He and the others commented on the high level of energy that is required for an effective on-screen voice and pointed out that a five hour dubbing session can be really tiring! Although her character voice is one of the more "controversial", I think Jill Frappier ("Luna") was the biggest hit with the fans. She seemed like a very sincere, interesting (and humorous) person and took a lot of time to talk with fans individually. She told us that although Luna in Japanese is very bouncy and energetic with a young, shrill voice, the North American producers wanted a more mature voice that was "a cross between Queen Victoria and See-Threepio"! I think she did a great job! Jill said that she loves cats and that she rather suspects she unconsciously makes "cat expressions" while she's doing the voice. She also told us, "You know how Sailor Moon makes those great expressions with her mouth wide open - well, when I see Terri doing the voice, I really think she does get her mouth open that far!" Ms. Frappier seems to really like the show and admitted that she'd love to see it in Japanese to "see all the parts they cut out!" Voice Talent Autographs
