Madoka and Kyousuke

The relationship between the two was an awkward one. On one hand, they have strong attraction toward each other but are unable to express their feelings toward one another due to circumstances that surround them. Something or someone inevitably get between the two (mostly Hikaru) whenever there was a chance for the two to talk. Even when they do get together, words get in the way.

In the beginning, Kyousuke's attitude toward Madoka is one of wonder and curiosity- an attitude that continued until the end of the series. Madoka's attitude toward Kyousuke was one of nonchalance. As time goes on, however, that nonchalance became a disguise to hide her true feelings toward him. She often gave Kyousuke the cold shoulder in front of everyone at school, especially in front of Hikaru. The problem was worsened by Madoka's consideration for Hikaru's feelings toward Kyousuke. This on again, off again, hot and cold demeaner of Madoka often leaves Kyousuke in a daze and looking for ways to decipher Madoka's intentions. Often, Madoka would let her guard down and show some tenderness toward him. The next day brings back the stone wall, leaving Kyousuke wondering whether the previous day was a dream.

Fret not, Kyousuke-kun. For that Madoka does find many ways to show how much she cares for you. When Madoka was to leave to study in America, she waited by Kyousuke's doorsteps the night before to say her last good-bye. When she was ready to leave because Kyousuke wasn't home because he was out looking for her, she spoted Kyousuke coming up the 100 steps on the hill where they first met. They sat down on the swings and talked. When she asked why he liked their town so much, Kyousuke replied that eversince the day he met her, this town has been his favorite. Madoka laughed at his seriousness and claimed that she had never given a thought to leaving for America- all this talk about leaving was just a joke put on by her to get everybody. The next day, the plane left without her. Once, there was a big exam, and Kyousuke was poorly prepared. Madoka tutored him as she often did, and went as far as letting him borrow her test notebook and preparing special notes for him to study. She definitely wants Kyousuke to do well. The love Kyousuke had for her, on the other hand, was beyond obvious. He hangs on every moment he has with her, and the sheer desperation and frustration that shows on his face everytime he thought he had lost her for good is almost painful to watch. Madoka has a constant presence on Kyousuke's mind.

One thing that Kyousuke does to Madoka is bringing out the best in her. She becomes sunny and cheerful in his company, a complete change from the steely-eyed dilinquent she once was. She also quit smoking after Kyousuke told her that it would be bad for her future unborn child. Kyousuke was changed by Madoka as well; at the end of the series, he was finally showing signs of decisiveness and determination! They were made for each other and complement one another, that much is certain. But will their love survive against the forces that are keeping them apart?
