a summary of my activities in october 1999 write me!
10/3 Well, I haven't really updated for a while, so here goes. I've had Singing Hoosiers Concerts all this weekend, and still have one to do tonight. I'm about to go to church here in the next few minutes, actually... Just wanted to do this real quick first. Mom has been here, staying with me for the last 2 nights. She's on the road now, on her way to West Virginia. On a related note, Happy Birthday to Aunt Betty yesterday! Speaking of yesterday, I made mommy take me shopping at Target and at Borders. At Borders, we got the Singing Hoosiers' new CD, "Magical Musicals" which you may find at a Borders near you, in the classical section, perhaps under a conductor listing of Erich Kunzel, or artist listing of Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. At Target, I got a new cordless phone, as well as a headset to go with it... I'm wearing it now... feel like a telemarketer! haha. I also got the new Dixie Chicks CD and the new Indigo Girls. Plus the normal stuff... noxema, deodorant, mousse, etc etc. I don't really know at this point what else there is to report...
How Could I Forget?!?!?! I've decided to get a new roommate for myself before the Housing People stick me with someone I don't know. Krislyn Weber (that's not a typo... only one b) is a fellow Singing Hoosier who lives currently one floor down from me. Her roommate is just awful, rude, rude, rude. Well, Krislyn and I were talking, and she was saying how she wanted to move out so bad but had nowhere to go, and I said my roommate was gone and I'm just waiting for a call any day now, and we both got a funny gleam in our eyes. =) To make a long story less long, Krislyn is going to start doing the paperwork Monday, and she may move in as soon as this week. =) She's very nice. =) She also has a refrigerator, microwave, small couch, air conditioner, air purifier, TV, and VCR, so who am I to complain, you know? haha.
Anyway... that's it from here! More to come...
10/4HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMAW! Well, this week promises to be a very busy and potentially stressful one. I have a theory quiz Tuesday, a speech due Wednesday, a piano quiz Thursday, Krislyn moving in Friday, Homecoming concert Saturday, the trek to and from church Sunday, and a paper and presentation on Monday in music ed. AAAAAAAAAAAAA! I'll be ok... really I will. [sigh] must go!
10/5 and the stress continues.... no time to update fully. quiz went well. must sleep. sleep good. sleep rare.
10/6 I did my speech on RENT today and did my best performance yet! For once, I didn't run over the 6 minute time maximum! I also got my speech "quiz" back (it counts for 1/8 of the final grade) and I got the highest score in my class! So, even though I only got 46 out of 50, she gave a 4 point curve! So, perfect score! That's about it for the day, except vocal jazz auditions are tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes...
10/7 Well, vocal jazz auditions were today, and I did ok, but I was pretty disappointed with myself. My sickness has really weakened me, and today's audition just wasn't a very good representation of what I'm capable of. Ms. Clowe always reminded me that I haven't really had to deal with a lot of "failure" when it comes to singing. I've always been able to do pretty well. But she also reminded me that most people get setbacks someday. So maybe now it's my turn. Who knows. If they place me, that's great. I can already tell, it's not exactly PESH jazz choir quality... but if they don't place me... I guess that's just the way it goes, no? ah well. we'll see. Other than that, no news.
10/8 Well, I got the grade back on my RENT speech... an A... =) other than that, no academic news today. Tonight I'm going to Applebee's with some fellow Hoosiers and then to Jessica Stuart (not previously mentioned)'s house for movies and stuff. As Jessica put it, and I heartily agreed, "I'm sick of drinking parties... ugh." There you go. So, that's the plan! I'm sure I'll catch the Stars score somewhere in there! GO STARS!
10/10 tsk tsk tsk, the Stars lost to Anaheim... ANAHEIM OF ALL TEAMS on Friday, but they beat San José on Saturday, so I guess I'll let them have one loss. =) I do pretty good keeping up, eh? Anyway, Krislyn is all moved in now. Not much to report from the past few days... I enjoyed a Tim-free weekend (not purely because it was Tim free, but because it was a change of pace). His parents were in town so I didn't see or talk to him from about 5:00 Friday until say, 6:00 Sunday. So, Mom and Dad, trust me, I have other friends, promise. As I said Friday, I went to Applebees and to Jessica's. Yesterday we had a Singing Hoosiers thing in the morning for Homecoming. I came home and took a 4 hour nap. Krislyn moved in some more stuff. Then we (Krislyn and I and some others, total of 7 people) went and had pizza and then went to a party. Now, I'm going to be noble and honest and truthful here... I didn't go to church this morning. I'm sorry. I think I'm going to call the other area Methodist church and see what their program is like, since I'm dissatisfied with FUMC Bloomington. And if that doesn't work, then I may try Campus Crusade or some equally non-denominational type college-aimed religious group. I have a friend in Hoosiers (Kelly) who is technically Baptist, but says she would love to take me to "InterVarsity" which is a non-denominational campus thingy. So, who knows. Other than that, today I did homework and finished moving Krislyn in and went to a floor meeting as well as a Governor's meeting since our floor governor was way busy. That about covers it. =) On a completely different note, may I just say, Mom and Dad, I am sooooo glad I came home when I did, because there is absolutely no way I could've made it anytime soon here, as in mid-semester. I mean, just look at my "Future Plans" section down there! ack! =) love you!
10/11 Well, being as I am writing this (relatively) early in the morning (10:30 am) there is not much to report. BUT, I just got the email from Dr. S with the vocal jazz callback list, and I'm on it! woo-hoo! I just love second chances! So, that will be tomorrow after Hoosiers practice. I will keep this posted with how that goes, and of course, any other major news.
***
Well, took the psych test... it was pretty hard, but not too awful. Also did a presentation on the role of popular music in music education in the class of the same name... I played some songs to demonstrate my point, one of which was the Jazzooka version of "When Doves Cry"... my whole class was like "whoa... that's so cool... how are they doing that?" It was fun. =) This week is busy... theory quiz tomorrow, speech propsal due Wednesday, Theory midterm Friday... like I said, Mom and Dad, I'm so glad I'm not trying to take a trip right now. yikes. Other than that, nothing doing... so, I'll post more tomorrow!
10/12 Well, today we had the callbacks for vocal jazz... I still don't really get the audition process around here. Today's audition for instance, consisted of basically having all the altos singing together and then Dr. S saying "is everyone in this group healthy?" and me shaking my head and him saying "that's what I thought" and then him dismissing us. So, I don't know if that's good or bad for me. Whatever. From what I understand, they may not even be taking any new altos, because they already pretty much have enough. So, who knows... I'll keep you posted...
10/13 Well, no news on vocal jazz thus far... I don't really know what else there is to report. The only other noteworthy thing is that my Music Ed professor updated our grade reports for us, and my current average is... [drumroll please] A PLUS! That's about all today!
10/15 Well, much to my surprise, the list of vocal jazzers came out this morning, and there was a certain Terri Worley on the list! who knew?!?!? I'm really excited about the whole thing. It's going to be a really lot of fun. =) In response to my father's plea for more academic info: it's very hard to tell exactly where I stand in most classes, because the final grade will be based on how many points I've accumulated over the course of the entire semester. For example, in my theory class, at the end, I will have had a chance at 1,000 points. Right now (not counting today's test...) I have 264 points, so that puts me in F range, duh. Hello! I've only had opportunity to get 280 of said points! So, do the math if you will, I think I'm looking at roughly a B+ or A- or so at this point... not bad, in my humble opinion. I haven't tallied all the points I have in my other classes, but I'll try to put some sort of prediction thingy on here soon, just for you, Daddy! The midterm today was not bad really, but as Timmy put it "there were a lot of opportunities to get one or two points taken off for stupid things." In other words, if I get a less than fabulous grade, I think it is because of lack of perfection rather than lack of knowledge. That's my opinion though, I suppose. But, the grade list went up in Singing Hoosiers yesterday, and I have an A! Woo-hoo! Thank goodness.... I was worried... =) Just kidding... love you! hahaha....
10/16 Today was a lazy day... not much happened at all. at all. haha. Yesterday (Mom and Dad, close your eyes... you don't want to see this) I went to the mall and spent plenty of money. So, Mom and Dad, if you accidentally read this, consider Christmas over. =) Well, the good news is that everything I got was stuff that I can definitely use. "Need" may be a strong word, but useful is definitely fine. Purchases included a sweater at Old Navy, another sweater at Buckle, Carrie's birthday present (only $5... you don't see her mentioned much here now do you?) haha... and then a lot of stuff at T.I.S. because they were having a midnight madness-type sale. There, I got a couple of music books, some CD's and (for exceeding a certain total bill) a free IU sweatshirt. Like I said, I know it's a lot of money, but it's all good stuff. Very useful. This one music book I got has a lot of jazz standards and also a CD to go with them... if I start auditioning for a lot of musicals and stuff, it will be ultra-helpful. So, I hope you can forgive me..... I LOVE YOU! =)
10/17 Well, we had another SH thing today. This time, it was the grand re-opening of the IU Auditorium. (It's been closed for I think 3 years for renovations... it's very pretty now.) The concert was kind of annoying, in that we were there from 1 to 5 pm, but probably sang for a combined 30 minutes. Lots and lots of downtime. Lots. But, it made for good bonding with my fellow Hoosiers. Last night Tim and I took a night off from the party scene (they were having a 70's themed party and we didn't bring our 70's clothes from home. shucks.) and instead we took advantage of the free movie rentals from the dorm library! We watched My Best Friend's Wedding and Thelma and Louise, both of which I loved! (except the romantic interest in MBFW was kind of dumb. had a hard time believing he was worth all the effort. haha) Anyway... that was cool. Other than that, not much has really happened. One thing though... as a result of my money-spending habits as I have observed them thus far, I'm thinking I may look into getting a job. Nothing major or too time consuming. I'm thinking just a few hours a week on the weekends. The weekends that I'm not out of town with Hoosiers. In other words, very rarely. But, if I worked at say, the dorm library, it shouldn't be too bad. Nice quiet, not too busy place... I could get stuff accomplished and get paid! So, I may check on that tomorrow. That's all of today's news though... more later.
10/18 Well tonight was Timmy's first choir concert. I really don't understand... if you could all hear him talk, you would think his choir was absolutely terrible. He says it's supposedly the "worst choir at IU" but my opinion is, "maybe so, but THIS IS IU!" So, I thought the concert was just great, truly. No complaints. =) Other than that, today was not too much to shout about. I checked to see if the Read library is hiring and they aren't so I may apply at one of the other dorm libraries or the music library or somesuch. I definitely want somewhere close, and ideally, somewhere relatively idle. haha. But you know you can't always get what you want. (yes, I have that song in my head too now, Dad... and Wayne.... and Chuck...) But as I said, outside of that, nothing much today. Tomorrow I think I get back the test and maybe a past quiz or two in Theory. Other than that, no plans. =) More tomorrow. (I hope you all apporove of the new grades page... tell me what you think! Use my message board!)
10/20 Hey kids! (Tim and I have started referring to everyone as kids, and sometimes talking to invisible kids... kinda scary. But we named them. There are 4. hahaha... I think we're just getting a little strange...) Sorry I didn't update yesterday, but you know.... I was busy! Well, let's go chronologically: yesterday I got my Theory midterm, and out of a possible 170 points, I got 148. About 87% or so. There was an entire section that I screwed up, but I've gone over that stuff now and I'm in good shape. There's also an optional test at the end of the semester, if I think I need it. If I take that test, then they'll drop my lowest test grade. So, who knows. But overall, I was fairly satisfied with my performance on the test except for that one section. In piano, we had to play the B-flat major scale, both hands, two octaves, and when I played it, I somehow managed to do it perfectly! I think my problem is (usually) that I look at my hands too much, and they just look kind of weird to me, so I think I'm wrong. But I didn't watch that time, just sort of moved my hands, and I did great! My teacher was like "My, Terri, you are really improving so much!" So, after piano, I had voice, in which I was once again complimented for substantial improvement! Yes! It was a good day! AND AS IF THAT WEREN'T ENOUGH: I got to see BEN FOLDS FIVE! They were AWESOME! Also, the opening acts were Fleming & John and Train. Fleming & John were pretty cool. And I love Train! Go Train!!! Other than that, not much is going on. As far as today goes, not much has happened. M, W, and F mornings are relatively boring because they're my lecture days. I did have a "quiz" today in Speech. I say "quiz" because the title is misleading. In reality, this thing is like some crazy percent of my grade... like 10% of my final grade I think. Seriously. But that class is kind of common sense-ish, so I feel really good about the "quiz"... no problem. But anyway... I think tonight we may go to the opera dress rehearsal... or we may just skip, because we heard that Wozzeck (the opera) is kinda freaky. So, who knows...
10/22 Well, let's see... Looks like I'm going to be applying for a job at McDonald's in the extremely near future. I've heard a lot of good reports from fellow dorm residents that they are very nice about scheduling you as little or as much as you want. So, even though there is that awful stigma attached to "working at McDonald's" I think it's going to be pretty good. No worries about transportation or anything... about 6/hour. So, you know, it's money, and that's very good. =) Out side of that, let's see. I got official word on my grade standing in Piano and I have a B+ which is (i hate to say it) better than I expected. I was thinking a B or maybe even B-. I just can't use both hands at once! Ack! But apparently I'm doing OK. After my midterm, I have a B+ in theory, but there's still a long way to go. I had my Speech of Ceremony today, and it went perfectly. I was really really happy about it. I'll also get back that quiz from the other day on Monday I think, along with my grade on the speech. We didn't go to the Wozzeck dress rehearsal, like I said. i'ts supposed to be freaky and probably not something you want to see more than once. =) We did go see Cabaret last night, which was way cool. I have a hard time believing the cast memebers actually invited their parents to see them, though... mature audiences only. I know if I had a daughter, I wouldn't want her to be in Cabaret. YIKES! But it was very good, dramatic... all those things that Cabaret should be. I was pleased. Anyway, that's about all I've got for today, so I'll sign off now...
10/23 Well, funny how quickly things transpire. I turned in my application to the McDonald's downstairs yesterday at about 3:00 and was hired ten minutes later. I worked my first shift today from 3 to 8 and get my first check Thursday. Other than that, not much new has happened. I work again tomorrow, and then not again until Wednesday. I have a quiz and a midterm to take online this weekend for music ed, but no other homework. I finished my Psych yesterday, and I get to take it easy this week in Speech while everyone else is delivering their speeches of ceremony... (i went first). So, that's it from here!
10/25 The Ani DiFranco concert was highly enjoyable, and I also found out that THE INDIGO GIRLS are coming in December!!! I'm soooooo excited! In other news, working at McDonalds is going very very well.... AND I got real midterm grades in Speech and Psychology... an A and a B+ respectively. I was thrilled! So, I'm now going to update my projected GPA on the academic section of this site and go to bed. g'night!
10/27 Well, today was the last possible day to drop classes at IU, so I guess I'm in it for the long haul... hee hee hee... =) No, really... there was a pop quiz in theory today. Fun, fun. I work tonight, so I'm updating this now (7:20pm) so I can go straight to bed when I get in. Daddy, I promise, this job is good for me... my homework is already done tonight! And, I REPEAT, it is ONLY 7:20 PM!!!!!! AWESOME! My piano midterm is tomorrow, and I'm headed to my practice room now, then work. Then bed! Woo-hoo! Go bed!!! =) Oh, also, before I forget, I was looking at my exam schedule, and guess what! I only have two exams! Who knew? I only have Psych and Theory, and they're both on Wednesday of that week. Speech has no exam, just one final speech. Piano's exam is on the last instructional day, so that's not technically during "exam week". Hoosiers has no exam, but voice will just be a matter of "how many songs do you have memorized" and as long as that's at least 4 and Ms. Havranek is satisfied, I'm in good shape. My Music Education class's exam is online and open book, so I don't think that'll be too stressful. =) And I think that's all my classes! Isn't that awesome?!?!?!?!?! yes!!!!
10/30 Well, sorry to wait so long to update... I apologize. Things have just been moving along, not too much of anything new to report. I had my piano midterm the other day, and it went very well, I think... I practiced hard and I think mi-re-do could tell. (quick anecdote... my Piano teacher's name is Mi-Rye Roh, pronounced Mee Ray Roh, so of course, we call her mi-re-do.) Other than the midterm, the most interesting thing to happen thus far has been that I bought my Indigo Girls tickets and they are in THE SIXTH ROW... I repeat, THE SIXTH ROW!!!!! But as I said, other than that, there is little if anything to report. Both school and work are going well... [trying to think of more news] We went to the opera last night, Wozzeck. It was good, but just plain freaky. Once is enough, quite definitely. [abrupt change of subject] We've somehow become the Gathering Room and we usually have the same five people in here every night... Krislyn of course, and me and Tim, and Sarah who lives directly below us and her boyfriend Nick who is in Tim's choir. Last night, Krislyn's Very Good Friend Jim was in town so he hung out with us too. It was like FRIENDS. How fun! I'm writing this Saturday morning, preparing to go out and do some errands with Timmy today, which is just plain annoying when you don't have a car. I'm not saying I need a car, because I don't really know what I'd do with it most of the time, but man, if you need to go anywhere at all and have to take the bus, it gets expensive. Not expensive enough to merit getting a bus pass, but expensive nonetheless. Yesterday, for instance, Tim and I took the bus to the student activities center (which is a good couple of miles away, up at the stadium, ugh.) to sign up for auditions for IU SING, the big "spring sing" sort of thing, I think. I really know very little about it. Today, we're going to a music store on North Walnut, another major hike, so we're taking the bus. And in a perfect world, I'd go to Bank One to see about setting up an account, but that's a different bus, so I'm thinking it's probably not going to happen. Ah well. [steps off soapbox] Time to go soon. I'll sign off now.
