a summary of my activities in november 1999 write me!
11/1 Well kids, this isn't really the "November Page" yet... I haven't made the graphic yet, or really done anything... I just wanted to get it partially done.... I'm not going to take the time to do the real update now... just know that I'm keeping busy, and web-design is not my top priority. Dad, please read that sentence to Mom. I think she'll be relieved. =) Anyway... look for updates in a day or two, but not yet. Love you all....
11/3 OK... finally updating... feels like it's been roughly forever. It has been an incredibly long day also. I hope you all enjoy the new color scheme and graphics, etc. Let's see... basic update: I took my psychology test today, and I didn't really think it was all bad. Pretty much OK. And in regard to IU Sing, those that were wondering... I did the big audition Monday and then I got called back for Tuesday's audition. For that one, they only called back 14 girls and 7 boys, but Krislyn and Tim and I all made that one. =) I was one of two freshman altos. The final list went up today and they only take 8 people total... two on each part. The youngest ones were sophomores. So, I feel like I made a good showing and I know what I'm looking at for next year. I don't really think there's much of anything else to report, believe it or not, so I'm going to sign off! Love to all!
11/4 Well kids, we've got a rehearsal tonight for the concert with the Bloomington Pops on Saturday and then I have work. Today was a good restful day... got to do my laundry (finally!!!) and do a little studying for tomorrow's test... Just a funny story on the laundry situation: High School kids, if you are reading this, go home and thank whoever does your laundry RIGHT NOW!!!!! OK... the story... as I go through my clothes, they generally become dirty in roughly this order: khakis, jeans, sweatpants, skirts. When my friend Jessica sees me wear a skirt to choir, she always asks if it's laundry time, because we've discussed this before.... Well, today it was so bad that I almost wore my HOMECOMING DRESS TO CLASS!!!! I settled on my VELVET SUIT though... thank goodness. =) So, that was your funny story for the day. Hope you enjoyed it, because I don't have time to write anything else! bye!
11/5 Well, I had my theory test today, and I thought is wasn't bad at all. Which of course, scares me. I don't like to be quite this confident. But, I will know Tuesday, but I'm not going to stress about it before then. And now, today's funny story: Well, Hoosier practice is on the 4th floor of the music building, so of course when one of the old, slow elevators comes, we are in the habit of packing the elevators pretty full. Well today, we had 20 people in there. Unfortunately the elevator got stuck between the 1st and 2nd floors, much to our chagrin. Well thank goodness for Adam Boyles having his score to Handel's Messiah... we sang the Hallelujah Chorus to pass the time... and then "We Dance" from Once On This Island, and also "Small Fry" and "Ole Buttermilk Sky" from our extensive Hoagy Charmichael repetoire. Then we still weren't out of the elevator, so we passed around a notepad and all signed our names and Ryan Kirk had a camera so we posed for pictures... Then we looked and saw that the elevator's weight limit was 2500 lbs. So, we passed around a calculator (so we didn't have to say our weights out loud) and added up our weights and it came to 2945 pounds, and THEN we realized that we each had backpacks, so we know we were at least 3,000 pounds. So, after that, we passed around breath mints for everyone and stripped down to one layer each... (it was after all, a coat and sweater day today) and we found out that Adam's roommate works for the Indiana Daily Student, so we're going to see if we can get in the paper. How fun! In the end, we got out after about an hour. Yes, an hour. But it was kind of fun. There's nothing quite like singing the Hallelujah
Chorus in a small elevator with reckless abandon in the midst of 19 of your closest friends. It was lovely. So, that was today's news everyone...
11/8 Well, I know, I know... I'm an awful person... I didn't update all weekend. But, really, there's not much to report really. Mostly all I did was work and study. And of course, the concert on Saturday. The concert went well... very well, actually. I was pleased. In other news, Tim and Krislyn and I have decided that we were meant to star in a 70's - 80's television series, but we can't decide which fits us best... Charlie's Angels or Three's Company. Of course, In Three's Company, I'm Janet, Krislyn is Crissy, and Tim is Jack. (and incidentally, Sara from downstairs and her boyfriend Nick are Helen and Stanley Roper) And in Charlie's Angels, Krislyn was the only obvious one... Jill/Farrah, duh. But Tim and I finally decided (after a heated debate) that in a lot of the pictures, Kate Jackson/Sabrina looks a little mannish, so that's Tim. That means of course, that I am Jaclyn Smith, Kelly. So, Tim and I made a Three's Company/Charlie's Angels collage yesterday, and now that's on my wall. =) It was fun. Not much else to report. Oh, Tim finally got contact solution yesterday, and yes Dad, we had to go to Target for it, and no Dad, we didn't walk. We did what all resourceful freshman do.... call Emily Haecker! (She just got a car a week ago, and the initial novelty hasn't worn off yet, so she was more than thrilled to give us a ride.) So that was fun... We were there and back in less than 20 minutes. Compared to the approx. 90 minutes it would've taken to take the bus, or hour or more to walk. So... yep. That's about it from here. Oh, and the last thing... as of right now, it looks like I'll finally pierce my ears on the 19th, so anyone that's interested can add earrings to my wish list! Gotta go now! bye, kids! (15 days till Thanksgiving break)
11/11 Sorry to not update for such long spans these days... I've been so busy, and yet today I feel so unproductive. so I figured maybe if I put a short entry on the webpage I can at least say there's one thing I accomplished today. I'm working on my final speech (exam grade) for (duh) Speech class and we have to have 6 sources, of which only two can be web-based. And I just don't understand the IU library computer system... can't find anything easily knowing as little as I do, so... who knows. But, thus far I have 3 "real" sources, a multitude of internet options, and (I think, hope, pray) a person that I can count as a source. (topic: campus recycling; person: dorm environmental officer.) I think I'm ok... now it's just a matter of writing a speech out of it. ugh. My other classes are plugging along. Nothing new, but no intentions of slowing down in any of them. My third and final piano quiz is a week from today. I suppose that pretty much covers the basic news, except, add to The List Of Things That You Can't Buy On Campus: Body Wash! Now, if you ask me, that's something IU would want its students to have access to... but maybe I'm an optimist... nay, a revolutionary. OK... must dash... Hoosier time. (ps, 12 days)
11/12 Well today was a better, more productive day. Besides my normal classes and stuff, I also registered for second semester. For those that are interested, I'm taking 19 hours next semester: Theory (3), Ear Training (1), K-12 Music Teaching Methods (2), Italian (4), Voice (3), English Diction (1), Piano (2), and Hoosiers (2). And a "Performance Lab" (1). The voice is no more time than what I'm taking now, it's just a matter of how much it counts. No difference in the class. The Performance Lab is a non-class that the music department asks us to sign up for so they can get more money from IU. So, I like to think of it as 17-18 hours. Well, we just got back from bowling, and now we're starting a movie and I don't want to miss it, so.... bye!
11/13 Well, last night we watched Cruel Intentions, which is just one freaky movie. Just odd. And tonight we watched Never Been Kissed which is one of the genuinely cuter movies of the very recent past. A nice contrast. Today I worked a pretty long shift at McD's and beyond that, I did very little, which was refreshing. Tim and I did go see a recital early this afternoon of a girl who is a junior in Martina Arroyo's studio. Martina is unbelievable... a total diva. We love her. In other news, remember IU Sing? Well... Read (my dorm) competes in IU Sing, as do most dorms and Greek houses. Read's VP of programming was asked to select songleaders for Read, who act as the writers and directors for our act. The VP, Brent, is in Krislyn and Tim's Italian class. He asked them to do it and to find one or two more people. So, now I'm a songleader! Which means that not only do I still get to be involved with IU Sing, but next year when I try out to be an emcee again, I can put "songleader for Read, IU Sing 2000" on my application under "IU Sing experience" which was of course an empty field this year. So, I find this exciting. The three of us finished the basic theme and plot tonight. Looks good! I'm really pretty excited about it. =) Oh my gosh, I almost forgot to write about the best part of my day. [sigh] So... tonight after we watched the movie and it was rewinding, we were flipping channels at about 12:45 am and of course there's nothing on... and for some ungodly reason Tim stopped it on the weather channel. Oh my dear lord it was the funniest thing I have ever seen in my whole life. I cried. I really cried... multiple tears from both eyes. I now (of course) have no real idea why he was so funny. I think the weather man was drunk, actually. He was going over the highs for the day and he was really really emphatic about how many record highs had been set. He went on for almost a full minute about it hitting 126 somewhere today. And then he said something about it being cold today in New York by comparison, and he covered New York with his hand completely, and said something like "See, New York is the Outcast State... we don't like to acknowledge New York here on The Weather Channel." And then I remember that to end his portion of the broadcast the guy said something and then gave the audience a kiss... like in an Olive Garden commercial where you have the fingers at the lips and kiss... you know? But anyway... that was his Big Adieu to the audience. It was hilarious. I think Krislyn thought I was going to explode. Anyway, the thing that struck me most about this was that I know for some reason that this (like the elevator incident) is going to be One Of Those Things that I attempt to tell my children about later in life, as if to prove to them that I'm cool, and that I too know how to have fun... but my kids won't buy it. What kid in their right mind is going to appreciate the joys of singing in an elevator or The Weather Channel in the wee hours of the morning? So, this to me is somewhat sad, but probably inevitable. It's sort of the ultimate geeky "you had to be there"... when your kids don't appreciate your "When I was Your Age" stories. So, Mom, Dad... I just want you to know that I love your stories and I always have. Especially the ones about the Summer Chemistry Institute. Because Dad, I finally understand what was so hilarious about the guy standing up and dropping his Physics book. The same thing that was funny about that weatherman tonight. =) But, aside from that, there's really nothing new, so I'm going to bed now! I love you all! Oh, and also, I just want to say thank you to those that have already sent me mail for my birthday Friday... it is so sweet! Thank you so much!!! *mwah!* <--- You know what that looks like! Hint: It's my "Big Adieu"
11/16 Well, it's been a hard last couple of days for a variety of reasons, including: basic academic stress, IU Sing stress, roommate stress, and slight homesickness (I think because I know I get to go home so soon). But I think I'm gonna make it! (haha) But anyway, it's about time to go to work now... I just wanted to say thank you for the lovely birthday mail!!!!! It's so nice to come in after a huge long day and have real mail from real people... =) I love you so much and I can't wait to see everyone!!!! Gotta go now! (7 days)
11/18 Well, I know I haven't done a good extensive update in a while, and to tell the truth, I thik the first time I'll have a REAL break will be Monday afternoon or so. Even my birthday is packed! ugh. But anyway, things are sort of back to normal... still stressful, but just in a "lots to do" way instead of in a "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! LOTS TO DO!!!!!" sort of way. So... things are good. I have had more mail this week than the whole rest of the semester combined. Thank you all so much! In other news, I just want to extend my very deepest condolences to Kelli, Tex, Ryan, and anyone else at Texas A&M... I'm so sorry about the accident and I hope that all your friends and loved ones are ok. that's it from here for now.
11/19 Well, it has been a fabu day, I must admit. Something about birthdays. =) Let's see... there was a pop quiz in theory, but it wasn't hard. I got my ears pierced and bought some new hair clips and got my hair cut. I received two CD's from my parents in the mail, a plethora of e-cards, a candle, a free dinner, and even some "virtual beer". tsk tsk tsk, what naughty friends I have. It was my 18th birthday! Not my 21st!!! =) I had a great voice lesson, got sung to in Hoosiers, and saw a double bill at the opera. And now I'm on my way out to party! =) All in all, a great day, and I just want to thank each and every one who contributed to it! And to all my friends in Expressions and to Perry in Jazz Singers II, I wish I could've been at the concerts tonight... I'm sure they were both phenom! Love you! Just FYI, I probably wont update tomorrow... I'm going to Terre/Terra Haute (which I can't spell, as you just witnessed) to see Krislyn in the Miss Crossroads to America Pageant! Woo-hoo!!!!! Love you all!
11/22 Oh my goodness, guess who the brand new Miss Crossroads to America is?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Yes, that's right! My roommate, Krislyn Weber, is now headed to the Miss Indiana Pageant in June! I absolutely cannot believe it! I took like an entire roll of pictures, so, as soon as I get those developed, it will be fun for the whole family. I even have pictures of me wearing her crown. And Timmy wearing her crown. Everyone wore her crown. We love her crown. =) In other news, today I have an essay in Theory and my final Speech, and then I have nothing to do academically until post-break. So, at 1pm today, I'm a free woman! (Except I have to go to piano tomorrow, but that's all.) So, today is clean the room, pack, and work on IU Sing stuff day. But, I should go now! See everyone very very soon!!!!!!
11/23 Well, I've just finished packing and I'm ready to go!!! See you soon!
11/29 Well, it was a lovely break, wasn't it kids? I'm so glad I got to see all those of you that I saw (and there were many of you! yea!!!) and I'm counting down the days (16) until I see you again, as well as those of you that I have not yet seen. Today was a busy busy catch-up sort of a day. I had the normal gamut of morning classes, etc. I found out that I got an A+ on my final exam speech!!!! Woo-hoo!!! I didn't get to tell the story here on the webpage, but this was the speech for which I made an outline, notecards, blah blah blah... was very well prepared, got to class the day of the speech, could not find my notecards anywhere. Gained permission to run "home" (across the street) to find them... couldn't find them. Created... or shall I say... scrawled new notecards in the elevator and while running back to class... spoke using basically only info from my head, since the notecards were nearly illegible anyway.... got an A+.
Yup. So, after speech today, I worked on IU Sing... went to Hoosiers... worked on IU Sing... did Theory... did Psych... went to an IU Sing meeting... got called in to work... worked... came home... updated webpage... went to bed. I think you see where I'm headed with this... Good night!
