a summary of my activities in january 2000 write me!
1/1 Happy New Year!
1/4 I'm writing now from Texas because I know I probably won't have the time and/or energy to write when I return to Indiana on Sunday the 9th. Overall, I have had a fabulous break. Fabulous. Unforgettable. Just plain great. And there's a big part of me that doesn't want to leave Texas. There are many reasons for this... =) So, keep watching this site for news about that, particularly if I end up moving, which may conceivably happen. I will of course send out an email, should that happen... but anyway. =) Basically, I've thoroughly enjoyed myself here in Texas, and I'm looking forward to my Spring Break visit... which for the record is on March 10th or so. And of course IAJE is going to be a blast. For everyone's info, I return to Bloomington for the first time on Sunday the 9th in the evening. I leave for New Orleans Tuesday night the 11th, and will return to IU the following Monday afternoon. That's all from here right now! Love to all! =)
1/10 Well, I'm at IU now, but [nervous laughter] not for long! I've been on the phone all morning to UNT, arranging my transfer, effective immediately... So, right now, I don't have time to go into detail but basically, the rumors are true! I'll be leaving Bloomington on Tuesday at 5 to go to IAJE, and I won't come back! yikes! That's all I have time for... bye!
1/10 continued Well, just to keep everyone aware of today's happenings... Today I called UNT about a million times and it looks like everything is straight with them. I register there on Monday and start next Tuesday. I tried to get a hold of the necessary people to withdraw from IU today, but couldn't... so tomorrow I'm going first thing in the morning straight to their offices to take care of it. As of right now, I'm about half packed up or more, with just over an hour until bedtime. I have until 4:30 or so tomorrow to wrap everything up, turn in my key, etc. and be ready to go to New Orleans. In other words, this may very well be my last writing from Indiana, because if I thought today was busy, just wait for tomorrow! So, good night to all, and when you hear from me again, I will be in Denton! Love to all...
1/17 As promised, here I am writing from Denton... things are busy busy busy, but I think all will be well in the end. I had a few hang ups today in trying to register and whatnot, but that can all be resolved tomorrow, I believe. My room is in Crumley Hall, at the center of campus, very nice and roomy and whatnot... I'm almost completely moved in I think. Sara is talking about moving in with me, which would be awesome but I don't want to get my hopes up. As we speak she's talking ot her current roomie, Teresa, about the whole thing. =) Personally, I think it was meant to be... but time alone will tell. Tomorrow I will auition for choirs and such and register and maybe buy books... and heck, maybe move Sara in! But things are going great... no major regrets yet.... except that I don't have internet in my room... [hysteric screams] So, needless to say, that was life shattering... but I'm in the Crumley lab right now and it's not all bad... So, I should go now and finish moving in and such... but I will update more tomorrow! Love to all....
1/18 Well, I had a lovely and productive day today, which included such activities as: getting up at 7, eating breakfast, calling admissions office, removing block from registration, finishing unpacking, being advised, securing a voice teacher, registering, paying tuition, getting an ID, auditioning for choir, shopping for books, eating dinner, rearranging furniture, doing laundry, checking email, and updating the webpage. [sigh] busy day, as i said. For those of you that are interested in the classes I'm taking, here you go... hour values for classes are in parentheses. Voice (2), Choir (1), Aural Skills (2), French Diction (1), Texas Government (3), Music in the Human Imagination (3), and the kicker.... the Physics of Musical Sound (4). Yes, kids, that's right... Physics. 4 hours worth of Physics. yikes. Incidentally, that's 16 hours. That will do me for right now I think, since 25% of those hours are PHYSICS! [screaming] But I'll live. Sara's taking the same class at a different time, and we are officially rooming together now... She can't move in until tomorrow, but for all practical purposes, she's my roomie. It's a beautiful thing. Any way, I've got to go for now, but updates will follow!
1/19 Well, let's see... busy day. Went to my first five classes! (of seven, ha!... T/TH are not busy!) I think it will be a hard semester but a good one. My classes are not bad. The gov't teacher is just as engaging as an 8 AM teacher ought to be... the French Diction class is hard but conquerable... Aural Skills is also hard but conquerable... and the Physics class looks like it will be fairly simple, at least to start. Ever notice how ever teacher thinks their class is an easy A? Every teacher said today, no joke: "There's no reason you can't get an A in this class if you just pay attention and keep up..." In other words, "you might pass if you read every word of all 7 textbooks, tape record every lecture and listen to it three times, take notes, and study for two hours each night...." yeesh. But anyway... choir audition update... FYI, there are 5 choirs at UNT that were determined by these auditions (in ascending order): Men's Chorus, Women's Chorus, Concert Choir, ACappella Choir, and Canticum Novum, aka Chamber Choir. Well, I got called back this afternoon by the director of ACappella. =) And when I talked to him, he was like [paraphrased] "we have a lot of good altos so right now i haven't decided whether to put you in ACappella or Canticum Novum." AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! Imagine my shock! I mean, when François Pinard was describing the choirs to me, he said Canticum Novum was basically the grad student choir. According to Sara, the directors of the Men's and Women's Choirs are in Canticum Novum! yikes! So, I went to ACappella today and until I hear differently, I think that's where I stay.... but I am really majorly impressed with myself! haha.... =) Anyway, beyond that, today was moving day for Sara... we brought over 2 carloads of stuff tonight (yikes!) and there's one still to go! But, we're definitely getting our aerobic excercise, pacing the stairs at both Bruce and Crumley... yeesh. Anyway, I am tired as can be and am going to bed... g'night!
1/20 Pretty much more of the same today.... a little class, a little moving.... nothing major to report right now... but it's late now kids, so, since there really nothing to say, I'm going to say just that... g'night!
1/22 Well... I've been doing a lot of fun and interesting things here over the last few days... Mom and Dad and Chuck came to Denton to bring me a few things yesterday, which was way cool, and in the meantime I've been on a job hunt. Friday Sara and I interviewed at this "MARC Group" place, which is a telephone survey joint. Basically, customer surveys for companies, asking them what they think of specific products. Sara was hired on the spot because of who she interiewed with (the head honcho, we think) whereas my lady said she'd call Monday. The bad news with the job, however, is that when you work, you have to work a 6 hour shift. Which is not exactly what I had in mind when they said they offered a "flexible schedule". So, while I'm waiting for the MARC people, I've been looking around elsewhere... such as IHOP. Well, I talked to the IHOP guy today and they can be a little more flexible except they need me to be able to work the 8pm-4am shift on weekends! yikes! That, and they need help on Holidays... I have visions of Easter at the IHOP. NOOOOOOOOOOOO! So I'm going to call and withdraw my application there. So I think I'll start looking into the campus jobs, because they have some knowledge of flexibility, from what I understand. In other news, Sara and I went to church this morning! We went to Asbury United Methodist Church, which is a sort of small congregation, from what we could tell, and very homey... Sort of Breckinridge Missionary Baptist-ish in my opinion... In all the nice little country church sort of ways... Like having people say their prayer requests out loud, playing "The Old Rugged Cross" during the pastoral prayer, and asking some random congregational member to give the bendiction. It was cute, and then we went out to lunch with the college group afterwards. So, it was a success. Now, we're about to call Teresa (Sara's old roomie) and go to Plano to pick up Sara's paycheck and Teresa's using a Dillard's card she has, and I'm taking advantage of Mom's lasagna. So, I had best run for now...
1/24 Well, (notice how most of these start with "Well,..." these days? What's up with that?) Well... (haha) today I had classes like normal, which accounts for most of the day. Nothing particularly new or exciting to mention in said classes, however... In my non-class hours, I bought my last necessary book, and checked out the campus jobs board. I saw a listing on said board for the front desk clerk at My Dorm, Crumley. Now tell me, how perfect would that be? It's like my McDonald's job was with location, and I can do homework while I'm there! Well... I went to the front desk to apply, and lo and behold the position is filled. So, I went to the room, and just as I was telling Sara that God obviously wants me to be unemployed, the phone rings, and the tele-survey people from Friday called and offered me the job. So, I said to myself, either this is the Devil tempting me, or God making up for the dorm job thing, and either way, it can't hurt to do the paid training this weekend. So, that's the plan. As it is, they only expect me to work 12 hours a week... it might have been 13... and that's all on Friday and Saturday nights. So, I figure that as flexibility goes, that may not be the top rung of the flexibility ladder, but it's not all bad. And Sara's working the exact same hours, no trouble. So, that's the job plan. Yes Dad, I know you're concerned. Have fun. In other news, Sara and I continued to shop for gyms tonight and We Have A Winner! We went back to the gym that we had looked at before, which was going to charge us the Steal of a Deal of $150 each for a 6-month membership. (count the months, we don't need it) Well we went during peak hours this time and discovered the hour wait to do much of anything (ie treadmills, stairs, bikes, etc.) so needless to say we were disappointed at best. So we went the a gym that we had heard was not what we were looking for, and therefore had not looked at yet, and of course it turns out that it's Heaven On Earth! The place is the Brickhouse Gym, a brisk walk down the street from the dorm. They have a semester membership that takes us through the end of May for $99.99! Woo-hoo! It was a cleaner brighter place with less crowding, and neat cardiovascualr stuff that have headphones jacks in them, so you can pick which of the eight or so TV's to listen to! Plus, a great aerobics schedule in an aerobics room with a springy floor... as in, a floor with a bouncy carpet. =) AND of course lots and lots of weight machines and free weights. It was way cool. So, Dad, when you read this, could you call Mom and tell me if I have permission to join The Gym Of My Dreams? feel bad saying no? good. haha. Oh and then, when we came home from gym shopping, the whole lot at Crumley was full... both sides of the building. So after circling the block for probably a good 15 minutes or so, we stopped (I'm not kidding) and prayed to God for a parking spot. And you will not believe that the next turn around, we FOUND A SPOT! Jut as we were rounding the corner to come in the lot, we starting singing "Kum Bah Yah" and then, right before our very eyes, a truck was backing out of the most remote spot in the whole place, and it's ours now! BWA-HA-HA! But let's see.... other than that, I don't really think anything happened today, so I'll sign off now. Much love to all...
1/26 Well let's see... There's really not that much going on of note. Just your average sort of stuff... classes. That pretty much covers it. The only really fun things are when we get back home. Let me tell you a story. Last night Sara and I walked to dinner, and it was pretty cold, especially when we were coming back at about 7:30, and it was drizzling rain. Well, there's this door in the back of the building that leads almost right up to our room, but we can't ever use it because it's alarmed, and you can't get in from the outside anyway. Well, we noticed that our neighbors Wendy and Jackie had their window open. (3rd floor) So we yelled up to them and asked them to come down and open the door for just a second and let us in. Well, we joke with each other about getting points for hurting each other.... we already had 2 points for hitting Jackie with Sara's car. (Don't be scared, not really) But anyway, they refused to come down, and Jackie said "Yeah well, we've got 10 points for leaving your butts outside in the cold!" So I pointed my MACE up at the window and said "You better watch out, when we get up there.... MACE in the face!" So we went upstairs and got into our room and grabbed a spray bottle of hairspray, and I cracked open the door of their room, sprayed the hairspray in and yelled "MACE in the face!" They were so freaked out... it was awesome. Of course they ran over here and once we let them in, they were like "Oh my gosh I can't believe you did that! How long until it's safe to go back in again?" heh heh heh and we were like, "Whoa guys, I don't know, it may smell too Spring Fresh in there for you" and we showed them the hairspray. It was really really funny. So that was the funny story for the day...
