Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 34

Twenty years? That's impossible!

You look at the impossibly old John, at the jarring wrongness of the changed Lab.

You feel the panic rise up in you. You can't accept this. You can't believe any of this is true. You think of your parents and your friends, wonder what they think happened to you all those years ago, if they're even alive. You can't deal with thoughts like these. You pull your arm free of the young man who was holding it and fall to your knees, your eyes screwed shut in concentration.

"Jay, no!" John shouts, his voice full of anxiety, but you ignore him. You've made up your mind: this place is just too wrong to accept.

With every ounce of your mind focused on your lab and your friends you jaunt once again.

*

Hyperspace pulls you home like a father embracing his child. You drift in the silence and colour of the realm between realms. You can hear John calling for you and his voice carries a strange echo as if he is calling you twice, his words overlapping themselves. Perhaps one of these Johns is yours while the other belongs to the discordant future. For a while you struggle towards them but then, too tired to decide, too tired now almost to care, you close your eyes.

The voices fade into the sweet lullaby of hyperspace. And then you hear nothing at all.
